Rosehip

Historical significance:

The rosehip, also known as dog rose, is one of the oldest cultivated plants in Europe. People have used its fruit as food and medicine since the Stone Age. Archaeological finds show its use for over 10,000 years. In the Middle Ages, rosehips were grown in monastery gardens and valued by monks for medicinal purposes.

Botanical features:

Rosa canina belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae). It is a hardy shrub that can grow up to 3 meters tall, with distinctive white to pink flowers and oval, serrated leaves. The shrub is very resilient and grows in Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. Its characteristic red, pear-shaped fruits form after flowering.

Contents and properties:

Rosehips are rich in vitamin C—much more than oranges. Other ingredients include vitamins A, E, K, flavonoids, carotenoids, pectin, and minerals such as calcium and potassium. The fruits also contain tannins and essential oils.
