Sage capsules with 4:1 extract from the leaves

You probably know sage as a kitchen herb or as tea. Vitalplant’s sage capsules provide the leaves in concentrated form as a 4:1 extract, without brewing and without the strong natural taste.

What a 4:1 sage extract means

An extract ratio of 4:1 describes how concentrated the plant is. Four parts of dried sage leaves are used to produce one part extract. The daily serving therefore corresponds to around 1,400 mg of leaf material. In contrast, the composition of loose dried leaves varies depending on harvest, location, and storage time.

What’s in the leaves. Sage leaves naturally contain essential oils, rosmarinic acid, flavonoids, and tannins and bitter compounds. The typical aroma comes mainly from the essential oils, which sit in tiny glandular hairs on the leaf surface.

Capsules instead of an infusion. If you have previously drunk sage as tea, the capsules give you a fixed amount per serving rather than an infusion whose strength depends on steeping time and the amount of leaves used.

Salvia officinalis: plant and origin

Common sage belongs to the mint family and grows as an evergreen semi-shrub reaching 30 to 50 centimeters in height. It has gray-green, finely hairy leaves and violet flowers. Only the leaves are used. The plant originally comes from the Mediterranean region and prefers sunny, calcareous soils.

One of Europe’s oldest cultivated plants. In the Capitulare de villis, a Carolingian ordinance for the administration of estates around the year 800, sage is listed by name as a plant to be cultivated. Through monastery gardens, it spread throughout Central Europe. For beekeepers, sage remains a valued nectar source to this day.

Sage capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of exactly two ingredients: sage extract and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. The product is vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free, filled in amber glass. A plant extract is only as good as its raw material, which is why every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Pharmacy.

A mint family member among a thousand relatives

Salvia officinalis belongs to the mint family, botanically Lamiaceae. You can recognize the family by three features: the square stem, the paired opposite leaves, and the high content of essential oils. Rosemary, thyme, oregano, basil, and mint are also part of it.

With around a thousand species, Salvia is the largest genus in this family. It includes clary sage, the native meadow sage, and the red-flowering scarlet sage from the garden center. For extracts, only common sage is used, Salvia officinalis; the addition officinalis refers to its historical use in pharmacies.

Where the oil sits

If you rub a sage leaf between your fingers, it immediately gives off a fragrance. The reason is glandular scales on the leaf surface, tiny blisters in which the essential oil is stored. They burst at the slightest pressure.

The characteristic gray-green color and the felt-like hairs on the leaves are adaptations to the Mediterranean region: both reflect sunlight and slow evaporation. That is why sage stays green even in summer, while other herbs have long since wilted.

Cultivation and harvest time

The plant is a subshrub, grows 30 to 50 centimeters tall, and prefers sunny, lime-rich, and rather poor soils. In nutrient-rich soil, it grows more luxuriantly, but produces less essential oil.

It is usually harvested shortly before flowering, because the oil content of the leaves is then at its highest. It is then gently dried: temperatures that are too high drive off exactly what matters.

From leaf to extract

An extract is not a ground leaf. The soluble components are drawn out of the dried material with a solvent, then the solvent is removed and the residue is dried.

How strongly it is concentrated is described by the extract ratio: at 4:1, one kilogram of extract is obtained from four kilograms of leaf material. This figure is one of the most important when comparing two plant products, because without it a milligram amount cannot be properly assessed.

Our sage capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

One capsule daily, swallowed whole with enough liquid, taken with a meal. That's all it takes. One capsule provides 350 mg of sage extract.

In quantity and in accuracy. An infusion yields very different amounts depending on the amount of herbs and steeping time, while an extract delivers the same amount every time. Then there’s the taste: sage tastes distinctly bitter and resinous, which many people only like in small amounts. The capsule gets around that.

Salvia officinalis, common sage, a mint family plant from the Mediterranean and therefore related to rosemary, thyme, and mint. The genus name derives from the Latin salvare. It should be distinguished from meadow sage and clary sage, which belong to the same genus but have a different active compound profile.

The leaves. They are grey-green, softly hairy, and have oil glands on their undersides, where the essential oil is located. That is why sage already smells when you crush it between your fingers. The dried leaves are used for the extract.

Yes, in two places. Meno Vital contains 100 mg of sage extract per capsule, and Bio Breath Tea contains sage as a tea ingredient. As a standalone product, this capsule provides the significantly larger amount at 350 mg.

Yes. The ingredients list has two entries: sage extract and the vegetarian capsule shell made of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. No anti-caking agents, no flow agents, no colorants or fillers.

Please discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand. This applies to herbal dietary supplements in general. In pregnancy and while breastfeeding, the decision should also be left to medical professionals.

The jar contains 60 capsules and, at one capsule per day, lasts exactly 60 days. It is therefore the smallest pack in our range. Bottled in amber glass; store in a cool, dry place.
