Four standardized plant and mushroom extracts in one capsule

Meno Vital capsules from Vitalplant combine four extracts from four different plant traditions. Take one capsule in the morning and one in the evening.

The four extracts

Yam root extract, 200 mg per capsule. Obtained from the tuberous root of Dioscorea, a climbing plant from the tropics and subtropics. The extract is standardized to 20 percent diosgenin, a plant-based ingredient from the steroid saponin group.

Reishi extract, 150 mg. Ganoderma lucidum, a tree fungus from the bracket fungus family with a strikingly shiny, reddish-brown fruiting body. In East Asia, it has been cultivated for centuries.

Red clover extract, 125 mg. Trifolium pratense grows in meadows throughout Europe and is rich in isoflavones, a subgroup of flavonoids.

Sage extract, 100 mg. Salvia officinalis, a mint family plant from the Mediterranean region; the leaves are used.

Four origins, one formula

The four ingredients come from different regions of the world and herbal traditions: yam from the tropics, reishi from East Asia, red clover from Central Europe, sage from the Mediterranean region. They are combined in a capsule that fits easily into your daily routine.

Meno Vital capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of five components: the four extracts and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorings. The product is vegan and gluten-free, bottled in amber glass. All four extracts are standardized, and each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Yams is not sweet potato

The two are constantly confused, especially because in American usage sweet potatoes are often sold as yams. Botanically, they are worlds apart: Dioscorea belongs to the yam family and is a monocot, more closely related to lilies and grasses. The sweet potato is a morning glory family plant and is therefore related to field bindweed.

True yams are a staple food in West Africa, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. Their tubers can weigh several kilograms, and the plant climbs several meters up poles. Not all species are edible raw; many must be soaked and cooked before eating.

What saponins are

Diosgenin belongs to the steroidal saponins. Saponins take their name from the Latin sapo for soap, and the comparison is meant literally: the molecule has a water-loving and a fat-loving end and behaves like a surfactant. If you shake an extract containing saponins, it foams.

Saponins are known from soapwort, horse chestnut, and quillaja bark. Quinoa also contains them in the seed coat, which is why the grains are washed before cooking; the bitter, soapy note comes exactly from that.

Red clover and the bumblebees

Trifolium pratense is a legume and lives in symbiosis with root nodule bacteria on its roots, which bind nitrogen from the air. Before the invention of synthetic fertilizer, clover grass was therefore the backbone of crop rotation: the clover brought nitrogen into the soil, on which the next crop thrived.

It is pollinated almost exclusively by bumblebees. The flower tube is so long that honeybees with their shorter proboscis usually cannot reach the nectar. When Charles Darwin wrote about this connection, it became one of the best-known chains in early ecology.

Four raw materials, four supply chains

The four ingredients come from four different production worlds. The yam tuber comes from tropical cultivation, reishi from East Asian mushroom cultivation on hardwood, red clover from European agriculture, and sage from Mediterranean herb cultivation.

For a combo product, that means four separate sourcing paths, four specifications, and four analysis packages per batch. A complex is therefore more labor-intensive to produce than a single product, not simpler, even if the end result is just one capsule.

One capsule in the morning and one in the evening, with plenty of liquid, taken with a meal. That is two capsules per day. Splitting the dose into two times is part of the recommendation and not just a matter of convenience.

Four, all with the specified amount per capsule: 200 mg yam root extract, 150 mg reishi extract, 125 mg red clover extract, and 100 mg sage extract. With two capsules per day, these amounts are doubled. There is no combined item hiding unknown amounts behind it.

Diosgenin is the characteristic plant compound of yam root and serves as the standardization value. 20 percent means: In 200 mg of extract, there are 40 mg of diosgenin. Yam is a climbing plant from the tropics, whose starch-rich tubers are also used there as a staple food; certain species of the genus Dioscorea are cultivated for extracts.

Trifolium pratense is a legume and a common sight in Central European meadows. Like many legumes, red clover naturally produces isoflavones, a group of secondary plant compounds also found in soybeans. The flowers are used for the extract.
