Eight B vitamins, 900 µg folate per capsule

The B Komplex Forte from Vitalplant focuses on the essentials: eight B vitamins, no additives. Folate and biotin are significantly higher here than in our B Komplex Aktiv.

What’s in the daily capsule

Folate as calcium L-methylfolate, 900 µg. That corresponds to 450 percent of the nutrient reference value. Calcium L-methylfolate is 5-methyltetrahydrofolate and therefore the form in which folate is present in the blood.

Biotin, 400 µg, or 800 percent of the nutrient reference value. Vitamin B12 as cyanocobalamin, 20 µg, also 800 percent.

The other five. Niacin 40 mg, pantothenic acid 46 mg, thiamine 20 mg, riboflavin 15 mg and vitamin B6 11 mg. All are between 250 and 1,818 percent of the nutrient reference value.

The difference from our B Komplex Aktiv: it also includes alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, choline, vitamin C and vitamin E, and the B12 is in the form of methylcobalamin. The Forte complex omits these in favor of higher folate and biotin levels.

What B vitamins do

Thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin and vitamin B12 contribute to normal energy metabolism. Riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, folate and vitamin B12 contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, biotin and vitamin B12 contribute to the normal function of the nervous system. Folate contributes to normal amino acid synthesis and plays a role in cell division. All of the claims listed are entered in the EU Register of authorized health claims.

B Komplex Forte capsules: composition and quality

Buckwheat whole grain flour is used as the carrier. Despite its name, buckwheat is not a grain, but a knotweed plant and therefore naturally gluten-free. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. The product is vegan, filled in amber glass. Every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Buckwheat whole grain flour, niacinamide (vitamin B3), calcium D-pantothenate (pantothenic acid, vitamin B5), thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), calcium L-methylfolate (5-methyltetrahydrofolate), biotin, vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), vegetable capsule shell: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.

Recommended use: Take 1 capsule daily, unchewed, with sufficient liquid.

Important notes: Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and healthy lifestyle. The stated recommended daily intake must not be exceeded. Keep out of reach of small children.

Allergens: According to the raw material specification, it contains no allergens requiring labeling in accordance with Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

Where B vitamins come from as raw materials

Two of the eight are produced biotechnologically. Riboflavin today grows mainly in fermenters with the mold Ashbya gossypii, which naturally produces large amounts of it. Vitamin B12 comes exclusively from bacterial fermentation, because neither plants nor animals can produce it.

The others are created through chemical synthesis, biotin via a well-known long reaction path. A B-complex is therefore, unless it explicitly consists of yeast or plant extracts, always a product of fermentation and synthesis. This applies to every provider alike.

Heat, light and cooking water

In foods, B vitamins are differently robust. Thiamin is especially sensitive to heat and also reacts to sulfites, such as those found in some dried fruits and wines. Folate loses a significant portion during cooking.

Riboflavin, by contrast, handles heat well, but breaks down in light. That is why milk used to become poorer in it in glass bottles when exposed to sunlight for longer, and why milk today comes in cartons on the shelf. All B vitamins are also water-soluble and, when cooked in plenty of water, partly leach into the broth.

Why calcium L-methylfolate

5-methyltetrahydrofolate is highly unstable in pure form and breaks down in air. For a shelf-stable product, it is therefore used as a calcium salt, which can be obtained and stored in crystalline form. The calcium here is therefore not an additional nutrient, but the reason the folate survives its shelf life.

The L in the name also matters. As with amino acids, there are two mirror-image forms, and only the L-form is the one found in the body. A mixture of both would contain only half the usable amount for the same milligram count.

What high percentages mean and what they do not

For water-soluble vitamins, three-digit and four-digit percentages are common because the nutrient reference values are set low and the body does not store large reserves. The 1,818 percent for thiamin results simply from 20 mg compared with a reference amount of 1.1 mg.

A high number is therefore not a quality feature, but a calculation. Among B vitamins, however, there is one for which a numerical upper limit for total intake has been derived: vitamin B6. Anyone who takes additional products with B6 alongside this complex, such as a multivitamin or a magnesium product with additives, should add up the amounts. The exact values are listed in each nutrition table.

Our B Complex Forte capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

One capsule daily, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. That’s all it takes. B vitamins are water-soluble, so a meal is not required; however, if you have a sensitive stomach, it’s better to take the capsule with food.

Eight capsules each contain: 40 mg niacin, 46 mg pantothenic acid, 20 mg vitamin B1, 15 mg vitamin B2, 11 mg vitamin B6, 900 µg folate, 400 µg biotin, and 20 µg vitamin B12. All are well above the nutrient reference values, with vitamin B1 at about eighteen times the amount.

The Forte is the more purist of the two: eight B vitamins, some at higher doses, and nothing else. 900 µg folate compared with 400 µg in the Aktiv, 400 µg biotin compared with 200 µg. The Aktiv, on the other hand, relies on methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin and adds alpha-lipoic acid, choline, coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, and vitamin E. In short: Forte for quantity, Aktiv for variety.

Folic acid is the synthetic precursor that the body must first convert in several steps. Calcium-L-methylfolate is already 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, the form in which folate actually circulates in the blood. It contains 900 µg per capsule, which corresponds to 450 percent of the nutrient reference value.

A whole range. Niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, folate and vitamin B12 help reduce tiredness and fatigue. Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and biotin contribute to the normal function of the nervous system. Pantothenic acid contributes to normal mental performance, folate to normal blood formation, and biotin to the maintenance of normal hair and skin.

This comes from riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, which is naturally intensely yellow; its name comes from the Latin flavus for yellow. B vitamins are water-soluble, excess amounts are excreted through the kidneys and strongly color the urine. A normal process, nothing to worry about.

All ingredients are of plant or synthetic origin, and the capsule shell is made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. Buckwheat wholemeal flour is used as a carrier. Despite its name, buckwheat is not a grain but a knotweed plant, and is therefore naturally gluten-free.

The bottle contains 90 capsules and, at one capsule per day, lasts exactly 90 days, or a quarter of a year. It is filled in amber glass because riboflavin and folate are among the most light-sensitive vitamins there are. Store in a cool, dry place.
