MSM is part of a global sulfur cycle

Sea algae release dimethyl sulfide into the air. It is exactly the substance we perceive as the smell of the sea, and it is one of the sulfur compounds that enter the atmosphere in the largest quantities.

There, it is gradually oxidized by sunlight, first to dimethyl sulfoxide and then to dimethyl sulfone, i.e. MSM. Rain brings it back to earth, where plants absorb it. That is why MSM can be detected in small amounts in milk, coffee, tomatoes, and vegetables. In industry, the same oxidation step is reproduced in a reactor.

Why this glucosamine is vegan

Glucosamine is traditionally obtained from chitin, the building material of crustacean shells. Shrimp and crab shells are the classic raw material for this. Such products are neither vegan nor suitable for people with a crustacean allergy and carry the corresponding allergen warning.

It can also be done differently, because chitin is also found in the cell walls of fungi. For plant-based glucosamine, the mold Aspergillus niger is fermented on corn, and the chitin is then extracted from the fungal mycelium. The molecule at the end is the same; only its source is different. Our glucosamine takes this route and is therefore vegan.

What the long compound name means

Glucosamine sulfate on its own is highly hygroscopic and not very stable in storage; it clumps and breaks down. That is why it is produced as a mixed crystal with a salt, either sodium chloride or, as here, potassium chloride.

The salt is therefore not an added ingredient mixed in afterward, but part of the crystal lattice. The potassium version has the advantage of not adding any extra sodium. When comparing two products, it is worth checking whether a milligram amount refers to this stabilized complex or to the glucosamine it contains.

Two raw materials, two questions of purity

For MSM, the purification process is the decisive feature. Distilled MSM is considered the higher-quality version compared with crystallized MSM, because volatile impurities can be removed more cleanly. Common specifications are 99.9 percent purity.

With glucosamine, by contrast, it is about the source and the actual content in the mixed crystal. With a product made from only two raw materials and 500 mg each per capsule, there is little else to describe. That is precisely why the certificates of analysis are the real product description here.
