Saffron now grows only as a clone

Crocus sativus does not produce viable seeds. The species is triploid and therefore sterile; it is propagated exclusively through daughter corms, which are divided by hand and replanted.

Every saffron plant in the world is therefore a descendant of the same ancient selection, probably created several thousand years ago in the eastern Mediterranean region. It blooms in autumn, and only for a few weeks. Harvesting takes place at dawn, before the flowers open, because the three stigmas are still protected then.

Feverfew looks less harmless than it smells

Tanacetum parthenium is a daisy family plant with small, daisy-like flowers and belongs to the same genus as tansy. Originally native to the Balkans and Asia Minor, the plant has naturalized as a garden escape throughout Europe.

Anyone who rubs a leaf between their fingers notices the difference from chamomile right away: the smell is sharp and bitter. The cause is sesquiterpene lactones, above all parthenolide, which serves as the standardization value for extracts.

Where monk's pepper gets its name

Vitex agnus-castus is a shrub of the Mediterranean coasts that grows along stream banks and in riverbeds and blooms blue-violet in late summer. At that time, it is extremely popular with bees because little else is in bloom.

The small, dark fruits look like peppercorns and taste hot and spicy, which is why they were once used as a pepper substitute. The Latin epithet agnus castus, chaste lamb, and the German name trace back to its use in monasteries. Botanically, the plant belongs to the mint family, so it is related to sage and mint.

What fits in a capsule

Capsules come in standardized sizes. The common size 0 holds about 400 to 500 mg depending on the bulk density of the powder, while the larger size 00 holds around 600 to 800 mg. Beyond that, swallowing becomes unpleasant for most people.

Sixteen ingredients have to share this space. That is why the number of lines on a label says little about what is actually in the capsule. What is more revealing is how the mass is distributed: in this formula, by far the largest share is made up of the five extracts, while the eleven micronutrients together account for only a few hundred milligrams.
