Eleven ingredients with vitamin C, E, B1 and folic acid

Vitalplant's Heart Complex combines eleven ingredients: secondary plant compounds, an amino acid compound, coenzyme Q10 and four micronutrients. One capsule twice daily.

What’s in one capsule

100 mg quercetin. A flavonoid that naturally occurs in onions, apples and capers. Plus 5 mg OPC from grape seeds and 2.5 mg resveratrol, both also secondary plant compounds from the flavonoid family.

50 mg acetylcysteine and 50 mg coenzyme Q10. Acetylcysteine is an acetylated form of the amino acid cysteine. Coenzyme Q10 is present as ubiquinone, its shelf-stable form.

25 mg green tea extract and 1 mg carotenoids. Carotenoids are the pigments that give carrots, tomatoes and peppers their color.

The four micronutrients: 100 mg vitamin C, 24 mg vitamin E, 1.1 mg vitamin B1 and 400 µg folic acid.

What the micronutrients do

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels. Collagen is the structural protein that gives vessel walls their strength.

Vitamin C and vitamin E help protect cells from oxidative stress. Folate contributes to normal blood formation and has a role in cell division. All listed statements are included in the EU Register of authorised health claims.

No authorised claims exist for quercetin, OPC, resveratrol, acetylcysteine, coenzyme Q10, green tea extract and carotenoids. For these, we state the amount and source.

Heart Complex capsules: composition and quality

Eleven ingredients in one formula, without fillers, anti-caking agents or colourings. The capsule shell is made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in brown glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Recommended use: Take 1 capsule twice daily, unchewed, with sufficient liquid at mealtime.

Important notes: Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced, varied diet and healthy lifestyle. The stated recommended daily intake must not be exceeded. Keep out of reach of small children.

Allergens: According to the raw material specification, it contains no allergens requiring declaration in accordance with Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

Quercetin is found in the peel

In onions, quercetin is not in the juicy interior, but in the outer, dry skins and the first layers beneath them. Red and yellow varieties contain significantly more than white ones, and in apples it is found in the peel, not in the flesh.

By weight, capers are the richest known food source. In the plant, quercetin is almost always present as a sugar compound, meaning with an attached sugar residue; free quercetin, as it is listed in this formula, is found only rarely in foods.

Resveratrol rarely comes from grapes

The grapevine produces resveratrol as a defensive compound when fungi attack it. It is found mainly in the skin of the berries, which is why red wine contains more of it than white wine: during red wine production, the mash stays in contact with the skins, while white wine is pressed off immediately.

However, as a raw material, it hardly comes from vineyards. The world’s most important source is Japanese knotweed, the plant that in Germany, as an introduced species along riverbanks and railway embankments, forms large stands and is controlled there. Its roots contain resveratrol at a far higher concentration than any grape.

Why cysteine is acetylated

Cysteine is the amino acid with the sulfur atom, the same one that provides the bonding in hair and nails. This very sulfur group is chemically highly reactive: in air, two cysteine molecules quickly combine to form cystine.

When an acetyl group is attached, the sensitive site is shielded, and the compound can be produced and stored as a stable powder. The characteristic smell remains, though: sulfur compounds smell, and acetylcysteine is no exception.

Why the green tea extract is dosed so sparingly

25 mg seems modest next to 100 mg of quercetin. Behind this is a European regulation that exists in this form for hardly any other plant extract: since 2022, green tea extracts have been specifically regulated because of their content of the catechin EGCG.

Warnings are mandatory above set daily amounts, and above a certain level its use in dietary supplements is no longer permitted. The amount used here is well below that. Brewed green tea as a beverage is not affected by the regulation, incidentally; it applies exclusively to concentrated extracts.

Frequently Asked Questions

One capsule twice daily, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid with a meal. That is two capsules a day, usually one in the morning and one in the evening. The meal is important because it contains several fat-soluble ingredients, including vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, and carotenoids.

The core of the formula is vitamin B1: thiamine contributes to normal heart function. It is joined by vitamin C and vitamin E, both of which help protect cells from oxidative stress, as well as folate, which contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism and normal blood formation. For quercetin, acetylcysteine, coenzyme Q10, green tea extract, OPC, and resveratrol, there are no approved claims; for these, we state the amounts.

100 mg Quercetin, 100 mg Vitamin C, 50 mg acetylcysteine, 50 mg coenzyme Q10, 25 mg green tea extract, 24 mg vitamin E, 5 mg OPC, 2.5 mg resveratrol, 1.1 mg vitamin B1, 1 mg carotenoids, and 400 µg folic acid. Eleven ingredients, all with stated amounts.

A sulfur-containing compound derived from the amino acid cysteine. The acetyl group makes the molecule more stable than free cysteine. Contains 50 mg per capsule. Sulfur-containing amino acids are found in food mainly in eggs, legumes, and onion family vegetables.

Carotenoids are the yellow-orange-red pigments found in many plants, including beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene. Even in very small amounts, they act as colorants and are therefore dosed accordingly low. So one milligram here is not a cost-saving measure, but the usual order of magnitude.

Ja, an mehreren Stellen.

All ingredients are of plant or synthetic origin, and the capsule shell is made of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. No release agents, no anti-caking agents, no fillers. The coenzyme Q10 comes from fermentation, not from animal sources.

The bottle contains 90 capsules and lasts 45 days at two capsules per day. It is packaged in amber glass. With a formula containing coenzyme Q10, carotenoids, and folic acid, that matters, because all three are sensitive to light.
