14 mg iron from bisglycinate with acerola and lactoferrin

Iron is considered the mineral that is hardest to absorb. That is why Vitalplant iron glycinate capsules combine three carefully matched ingredients in one capsule.

The three ingredients

Iron bisglycinate, 51.9 mg per capsule. This provides 14 mg of elemental iron, which equals 100 percent of the nutrient reference value. In bisglycinate, the iron is bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine, a structure known as a chelate.

Acerola extract, 320 mg, providing 80 mg of natural vitamin C. In nutrition science, vitamin C and iron are traditionally considered together, which is why both are included here in one capsule.

Lactoferrin, 101 mg. An iron-binding protein that occurs naturally in milk. It is obtained from whey.

What iron and vitamin C do

Iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin and to normal oxygen transport in the body. It also contributes to normal cognitive function and plays a role in cell division.

Vitamin C increases iron absorption. This claim, like the iron claims mentioned above, is listed in the EU Register of authorized health claims.

Iron Glycinate Capsules: composition and quality

Important note: This product contains lactoferrin from milk and is therefore not vegan. If you are looking for a purely plant-based source of iron, you will find it in our Iron Vegan capsules with curry leaf extract.

The formula consists of four ingredients: acerola extract, lactoferrin, iron bisglycinate, and the capsule shell made from hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorings. Packed in amber glass. Every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Pharmacy.

Recommended use: Take 1 capsule daily approx. 1 h before a meal, without chewing, with sufficient liquid.

Important notes: Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and lifestyle. The stated recommended daily intake must not be exceeded. Keep out of the reach of small children.

Allergens: Contains milk (lactoferrin).

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

Heme Iron and Non-Heme Iron

In nutritional science, two forms are distinguished. In meat, offal, and fish, iron is found mostly as heme iron, built into the same ring complex that also gives blood its color. In plant-based foods, by contrast, it is present as non-heme iron, bound to other molecules.

The amount the body absorbs from food differs greatly between the two forms. That is why it is not enough to compare the milligrams in a nutrition table: where the iron comes from is part of the question.

Promoters and antagonists at the table

Non-heme iron reacts strongly to what it is eaten with in the same meal. Organic acids such as vitamin C and citric acid support absorption, which is why vitamin C and iron so often appear together in recipes.

In the other direction, tannins in coffee, black and green tea, phytic acid from whole grains and legumes, as well as larger amounts of calcium, such as from dairy products, have an inhibitory effect. That is why there is a time gap in our consumption recommendation: one hour before the meal, and not together with the morning coffee.

What lactoferrin is

Lactoferrin is a spherical protein that can tightly bind two iron ions. It is found in the milk of mammals, especially in abundance in the first milk after birth, and also in tears and saliva.

It is obtained from whey, a by-product of cheese production, using ion exchangers that fish it out of the liquid. The protein is sensitive to heat, so it is processed gently. Because it comes from milk, this product is not vegan and carries the allergen warning milk.

Why the number on the label says little about iron

The reference intake is 14 mg, a single label value for all adults. Actual needs, however, vary widely: the German Nutrition Society recommends 10 mg for men, 15 mg for women between 19 and 50 years of age, and 10 mg again after menopause.

With iron, there is another special feature: the body cannot actively excrete excess iron; it mainly regulates intake. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, a long-term precautionary intake therefore does not make sense. Iron status can be determined in the blood, and that is exactly where the decision belongs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take one capsule daily, about one hour before a meal, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. The time gap before eating is included in the recommendation for a reason; more on that in the next question.

Because a whole range of food components bind iron in the intestine and thus make it unavailable. These include phytates from whole grains and legumes, calcium from dairy products, and above all the tannins from coffee and black tea. Leaving some time between them avoids this. Anyone who does not tolerate the capsule on an empty stomach should take it with a light meal without dairy products.

Better not at the same time. The polyphenols in coffee, black tea, and green tea form sparingly soluble compounds with iron and are the most effective of all inhibitors. A gap of around one hour on either side is usually enough. Water or a glass of orange juice, on the other hand, are unproblematic.

51.9 mg iron bisglycinate, corresponding to 14 mg elemental iron and thus 100 percent of the nutrient reference value. Plus 320 mg acerola extract with 80 mg natural vitamin C, also 100 percent. Both are deliberately combined: vitamin C increases iron absorption.

In bisglycinate, the iron is bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine, a structure known as a chelate. This bond shields the iron ion, so it is less freely available in the intestine. That is exactly what the choice of this form aims for: it is free iron that irritates the stomach in many classic iron salts.

No. The formula contains lactoferrin, an iron-binding protein derived from milk. That means the capsules are neither vegan nor suitable for people with a milk protein allergy. If you are looking for a purely plant-based source of iron, you will find it in our Iron Vegan capsules with curry leaf extract.

Both are at 100 percent of the nutrient reference value. Iron contributes to normal red blood cell and hemoglobin formation, to normal oxygen transport in the body, to normal cognitive function, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamin C increases iron absorption and contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

The container contains 90 capsules and, at one capsule a day, lasts exactly 90 days, or one quarter of a year. It is filled in amber glass. Iron supplements should be kept especially securely out of the reach of children, because iron can be dangerous for children in larger amounts.
