How your cardiovascular system works

Your cardiovascular system is your body's transport system. Around the clock, your heart pumps blood through a branching network of blood vessels, around 7,000 liters daily, supplying every single cell with oxygen and nutrients. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the organs, veins bring oxygen-poor blood back, and the actual exchange of substances takes place in the hair-thin capillaries.

Your heart: a muscular hollow organ

Your heart is about the size of your fist and weighs around 300 grams. It sits slightly to the left in the chest, between the two lungs, and consists of four chambers, two atria and two main chambers. The right side of the heart pumps oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, while the left side pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. Four heart valves ensure that the blood flows in the right direction.

With each heartbeat, your heart pumps about 70 ml of blood. At a resting heart rate of 70 beats per minute, that adds up to around 5 liters per minute or 7,000 liters per day, and during physical exertion this amount can rise to as much as 25 liters per minute.

Arteries, veins and capillaries

The blood vessels form a network with a total length of about 100,000 kilometers, enough to circle the Earth twice. Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart and have thick, elastic walls that withstand high blood pressure. Veins carry oxygen-poor blood back, and in the legs, venous valves support the return flow against gravity. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels, with a diameter of just 5 to 10 micrometers, so narrow that red blood cells have to deform to fit through them.

Fascinating facts about your heart

  • With the sinus node, your heart has its own pacemaker and continues beating independently of the brain.
  • A drop of blood completes the entire circulation through your body in about one minute.
  • All blood vessels together would measure around 100,000 kilometers, enough for more than two trips around the Earth.
  • Over an entire lifetime, your heart beats more than 2.5 billion times.

💡 INFO Your heart beats an average of 100,000 times per day and pumps about 7,000 liters of blood in the process. Over a lifetime, that amounts to more than 2.5 billion heartbeats and around 200 million liters of blood.

Nutrients and products for your heart routine

A number of nutrients play a special role when it comes to the heart and blood vessels. Omega-3 (EPA and DHA) and thiamine (vitamin B1) stand out in particular: both contribute to normal heart function. In addition, other nutrients support the interplay between the heart, blood vessels and metabolism, which you can cover partly through your diet and partly specifically with our products:

  • Vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism
  • Potassium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure
  • Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels
  • Vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress
  • Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function
  • DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function (with a daily intake of 250 mg DHA)

Omega-3 vegan: EPA and DHA from algae oil

Omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids found mainly in oily sea fish and algae. EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function, with positive effects achieved through a daily intake of 250 mg EPA and DHA. DHA also contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function (with a daily intake of 250 mg DHA).

What is interesting here: fish do not produce omega-3 themselves, they obtain it from algae. Our Omega-3 vegan therefore goes straight to the source and derives EPA and DHA from algae oil, a plant-based alternative to fish oil with identical fatty acids, completely without fishy taste and independent of marine pollutants.

B vitamins: thiamine and homocysteine metabolism

Thiamine (vitamin B1) is a water-soluble B vitamin that plays a central role as a coenzyme in energy metabolism, and the heart muscle has a very high energy requirement. Thiamine contributes to normal heart function and, alongside omega-3, is the only other nutrient that directly contributes to heart function. You can find thiamine in whole grain products, legumes, pork and sunflower seeds.

Vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and folic acid contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism. Homocysteine is an amino acid that is formed during the breakdown of methionine and is naturally regulated in the body. Vegans (B12 requirement) and older people (reduced B12 absorption) often benefit particularly from supplementation.

For an extended routine, Vitamin B Complex Active also offers bioactive B vitamin forms (methylcobalamin, Quatrefolic®), alpha-lipoic acid (200 mg), choline (85 mg) and coenzyme Q10 (30 mg).

Coenzyme Q10: high-dose ubiquinone

Coenzyme Q10, also called ubiquinone, is a vitamin-like substance produced by the body and is found in every cell, especially concentrated in organs with high energy demands such as the heart muscle, liver and muscles. The body's own production gradually declines from around the age of 30 onward. If you would like to supplement Q10 specifically, you can find Coenzyme Q10 from us as high-dose ubiquinone in a vegan capsule, lab-tested, without unnecessary additives and filled in light-protective amber glass.

Magnesium: Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, as well as normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal functioning of the nervous system. The German Nutrition Society recommends 300 to 400 mg daily. Our Magnesium Complex 3-in-1 combines three forms of magnesium (citrate, bisglycinate, malate). If you prefer a simple foundation, you'll find it in Magnesium Citrate.

Potassium: Potassium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure and is abundant in fruit (bananas, apricots), vegetables (spinach, potatoes) and legumes.

Vitamin C: Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels. In addition, vitamin C contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. You can find it from us as Vitamin C 1000.

Heart Complex: many building blocks in one capsule

If you don't want to combine several individual supplements, you'll find in Heart Complex a well-designed formula that combines vitamins and plant-based supporting substances in one capsule. On board are, among other things, thiamine, folic acid, vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as plant-based classics such as quercetin, OPC from grape seeds and resveratrol.

Thiamine contributes to normal heart function, vitamin C to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, folic acid to normal homocysteine metabolism and vitamin E to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. The plant-based supporting substances round off the formula.

Eat with your heart in mind: natural nutrient sources

Many nutrients that play a role for the heart and blood vessels occur naturally in foods. A varied diet is therefore the best foundation, and targeted supplementation can usefully round it out. Here's an overview of where the most important nutrients are found:

  • Omega-3 (EPA and DHA): Oily sea fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines, as well as microalgae. The plant-based precursor ALA is provided by flaxseed oil, walnuts and chia seeds.
  • Potassium: Bananas, apricots, avocados, spinach, potatoes and legumes.
  • Magnesium: Nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, whole grain products, legumes and leafy green vegetables.
  • Thiamine (vitamin B1): Whole grain products, legumes, sunflower seeds and pork.
  • Vitamin C: Bell peppers, citrus fruits, berries, broccoli and rose hips.
  • Folic acid: Leafy green vegetables, legumes, eggs and whole grain products.

Those who eat a varied diet already cover a large part of these nutrients through food. If your diet is unbalanced, your needs are increased, or you follow a purely plant-based diet (especially B12 and omega-3), targeted supplementation can fill the gaps.

A heart-conscious lifestyle: the foundation of your routine

A balanced diet and a mindful lifestyle are the foundation. Food supplements are not a substitute for this, but a useful addition.

Mediterranean diet

The Mediterranean diet, with plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grain products, legumes, olive oil, nuts and fish, is considered particularly heart-conscious. Oily sea fish two to three times a week provides EPA and DHA, or you can use algae oil as a plant-based alternative. Plenty of fruit and vegetables (5 portions daily) provide vitamins, minerals and fiber, and moderation with salt is worthwhile: around 5 to 6 g per day is considered a guideline.

Exercise

Regular exercise is one of the most effective routines for a vital cardiovascular system. 150 minutes of moderate activity per week is a good guideline. Endurance training (jogging, cycling, swimming) plus strength training is the ideal mix, and everyday movement counts too: taking the stairs, cycling to work, going for walks.

Stress management and sleep

Recovery is part of it too. Relaxation techniques (progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, yoga), social contacts, hobbies and sufficient sleep (7 to 8 hours) are fixed building blocks of a balanced everyday life.

How to integrate Vitalplant into your everyday life

Your daily basic routine

In the morning with breakfast, 1 capsule of Omega-3 vegan (EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function), plus 1 capsule of Vitamin B Complex Forte: thiamine contributes to normal heart function, while B6, B12 and folic acid contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism.

Extended routine

Optionally, add 1 capsule of Coenzyme Q10 as a substance produced by the body and 1 capsule of Magnesium Citrate: magnesium contributes to normal muscle function. For a more comprehensive routine, Heart Complex may also be worth considering.

Routine for active people

Before exercise, Magnesium Complex 3-in-1 is a good fit: magnesium contributes to normal muscle function. Plus the daily Omega-3 vegan routine. If you would like to integrate L-citrulline and L-arginine, you can find them in the Men's Capsules.
