Magnesium citrate with 123 mg magnesium per capsule

Vitalplant Magnesium Citrate capsules rely on a single compound: magnesium citrate, the magnesium salt of citric acid. Two capsules cover two-thirds of the nutrient reference value.

What makes magnesium citrate special

Citric acid occurs naturally in citrus fruits and is also an intermediate in the body’s energy metabolism. When magnesium is bound to it, an organic compound is formed.

800 mg magnesium citrate per capsule, resulting in 123 mg of elemental magnesium. That is the key figure: it is not the weight of the compound that matters, but the magnesium content within it.

Two capsules instead of four. Because citrate contains a relatively high proportion of magnesium, two capsules a day are enough. For comparison: our magnesium glycinate requires four capsules for a similar amount, and the magnesium complex three. If you prefer fewer capsules, citrate is the best choice.

What magnesium does in the body

Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal energy metabolism. It contributes to the normal function of the nervous system and to normal psychological function.

Magnesium also contributes to normal protein synthesis, to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, and plays a role in cell division. All of the above claims are listed in the EU Register of nutrition and health claims.

Magnesium Citrate Capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of two components: magnesium citrate and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at the Stern Pharmacy.

Magnesium sits at the heart of chlorophyll

Chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants, contains a single magnesium atom in the center of its molecule. In red blood pigment, an iron atom sits in exactly the same place, and the surrounding structure is strikingly similar.

Green is therefore a useful rule of thumb: spinach, Swiss chard, broccoli, and kale provide magnesium. Also included are nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, legumes, whole grains, and dark chocolate.

Why whole grains and white flour differ

In the grain kernel, most of the magnesium is found in the outer layers and the germ. These are exactly the parts removed during milling. White flour, polished rice, and refined sugar contain accordingly little of it.

Some is also lost during cooking, because minerals are water-soluble and pass into the cooking water. Anyone who steams vegetables instead of boiling them in plenty of water, or reuses the cooking water, keeps more in the food.

Why 800 mg only make 123 mg

In magnesium citrate, two to three magnesium atoms are attached to a citrate structure. The structure weighs significantly more than the metal, which is why the magnesium content is around 15 percent. In magnesium oxide, by contrast, it is about 60 percent.

But that does not mean oxide would be the better choice. Magnesium oxide dissolves very poorly in water, while organic compounds such as citrate, malate, or bisglycinate dissolve much better. A high elemental content on paper and actual solubility are two different things. The price of good solubility is volume: 800 mg of compound takes up space, which is why this capsule is large.

A look at the water bottle

The most underestimated source of magnesium is sitting in the crate in many homes. German mineral waters vary significantly: some contain less than one milligram per liter, others over a hundred.

A water may be described as containing magnesium, according to the Mineral and Table Water Ordinance, from 50 milligrams per liter. The exact values are listed in the analysis on the label, usually in small print next to calcium, sodium, and bicarbonate. Two liters of a magnesium-rich water can certainly be in the range of a capsule.

Our Magnesium Citrate Capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Two capsules daily with plenty of liquid, with or after a meal. The meal is mentioned here deliberately in the recommendation: magnesium citrate is usually better tolerated with food than on an empty stomach.

800 mg magnesium citrate per capsule, providing 123 mg elemental magnesium and therefore 33 percent of the nutrient reference value. With two capsules, that is 246 mg per day, or 66 percent. The second figure is the key one: it shows how much pure mineral is delivered, regardless of which partner it is bound to.

Magnesium citrate is the salt of citric acid and, among common magnesium compounds, the most water-soluble. Citrate is also not a foreign substance to the body: it is an intermediate in the citric acid cycle, the metabolic pathway that takes place in every cell. Its elemental magnesium content is around 15 percent, higher than that of bisglycinate.

We offer three variants. The citrate is the simplest and provides 246 mg of magnesium with two capsules. Magnesium glycinate relies on bisglycinate, the most stomach-friendly form, and provides 280 mg with four capsules. The magnesium complex combines citrate, bisglycinate, and malate and delivers 375 mg with three capsules, i.e. 100 percent of the nutrient reference value.

This is a known property of magnesium salts and not a quality issue. Magnesium that is not absorbed remains in the intestines and binds water there. Citrate shows this effect more strongly than other forms because it is particularly soluble. If you are sensitive, take the two capsules separately instead of together, or switch to our magnesium glycinate.

At 246 mg per day, or 66 percent of the nutrient reference value, the requirements are clearly met. Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to a normal energy-yielding metabolism, to electrolyte balance, and to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.

The recommendation does not prescribe a fixed time, only the relation to meals. Many people take one capsule with breakfast and one with dinner; this spreads out the amount and is also the gentler option for the intestines. In the end, what matters is consistency over several weeks.

The bottle contains 120 capsules and lasts 60 days at two capsules per day. The ingredient list has two entries: magnesium citrate and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. No anti-caking agents, no fillers. Bottled in amber glass, store in a cool, dry place.
