Turmeric extract with 95 percent curcuminoids

There is a significant difference between turmeric from the spice rack and a turmeric extract. Vitalplant turmeric capsules contain an extract standardized to 95 percent curcuminoids.

What 95 percent curcuminoids mean

Curcuminoids are the yellow pigments in the turmeric root, especially curcumin. In dried spice powder, they make up only a few percent, depending on origin. An extract with 95 percent is therefore highly concentrated.

440 mg extract per capsule. To take in the same amount of curcuminoids through spice powder, significantly larger quantities would be needed than can reasonably be consumed.

5 mg black pepper extract. Standardized to 95 percent piperine, the pungent compound in black pepper. Turmeric and pepper have always been a standard combination in Indian cuisine, for example in curry blends.

Curcuma longa: plant and origin

Turmeric belongs to the ginger family. What is used is not the root in the strict sense, but the rhizome, an underground stem section, like ginger forms as well. Freshly cut, it is a bright orange.

Turmeric is grown mainly in India, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years as a spice and dye plant. After harvesting, the rhizomes are boiled, dried, and ground. For the extract, this is followed by another processing step.

Turmeric capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of three ingredients: turmeric extract, black pepper extract, and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent lab.

Vitalplant is backed by Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

Three pigments under one name

Curcuminoids are not a single compound, but a group of three: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin. They differ only by the absence of individual side groups, and in typical extracts the ratio is about three quarters, one fifth, and a small remainder.

This is important when comparing: 95 percent curcuminoids does not mean 95 percent curcumin. Some suppliers state the curcumin content separately, others do not. Anyone placing two cans side by side should check whether the same size is meant.

How a rhizome becomes an extract

After harvest, the rhizomes are first boiled. This is not just for preservation: the starch gelatinizes, and the pigment spreads evenly throughout the tissue. It is then dried over several days and the rough outer skin is polished off.

For the extract, the ground rhizome is extracted with a solvent. What remains is a viscous oleoresin from which the curcuminoids are crystallized. Only this crystallization step achieves 95 percent purity; it cannot be reached by simple concentration alone.

Why turmeric turns everything yellow

Curcumin is an exceptionally strong pigment and is approved in the EU as a food coloring under the number E 100. It is fat-loving, so it sticks to plastic and skin and is hardly washable with water alone.

It also reacts to acidity: in acidic conditions it stays yellow, while in alkaline conditions it turns reddish brown. Anyone who adds turmeric to soapy water sees the effect immediately. And it fades in light, which is one reason for brown glass.

Spice, extract, and the question of purity

Dried turmeric powder from the spice aisle contains only a few percent curcuminoids, depending on its origin. And not every turmeric root is Curcuma longa: Javanese turmeric, Curcuma zanthorrhiza, is a separate species with a different profile.

Because the color determines market value, ground turmeric is an internationally well-known candidate for adulteration; in some cases, lead-containing pigments have even been detected. That is precisely why heavy metal analysis for every batch of this raw material is not just for show on the certificate.

Our Turmeric Capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid, with a meal. The meal is part of it: curcuminoids are fat-soluble and are better absorbed together with a little fat from food. A dish with oil, butter, or nuts is more suitable for this than a glass of water on an empty stomach.

Curcuminoids are the yellow pigments in turmeric root and serve as the standardization value. 95 percent means that around 418 mg of curcuminoids are contained in 440 mg of extract. Without this information, a milligram amount says little, because an unstandardized root powder can contain only a fraction of that amount for the same quantity.

In concentrated form. Dried turmeric powder from the spice rack contains only a few percent curcuminoids, depending on its origin. To get the amount found in a single capsule, you would need a good ten grams of it, so several tablespoons. As a spice, turmeric is still a good thing, just on a different scale.

Turmeric and black pepper have long been used together in Indian cuisine, for example in curry blends. Our formula builds on this combination: 5 mg black pepper extract, standardized to 95 percent piperine. Piperine is the pungent compound in pepper and is responsible for its distinctive flavor.

The extract in the sealed capsule does not come into contact with teeth or textiles, so no. However, anyone who opens a capsule should be careful: curcuminoids are strong colorants that leave visible marks on light surfaces. That is exactly why the directions for use say to swallow whole.

Yes. The formula consists of turmeric extract, black pepper extract, and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No anti-caking agents, no fillers, no colorants, because the root itself provides the color.

Curcuma longa belongs to the ginger family and is therefore a close relative of ginger and cardamom. The underground rootstock is used, botanically a rhizome. The plant has been cultivated for thousands of years in South and Southeast Asia, where it is both a spice, a dye, and a crop.

The jar contains 90 capsules. At one capsule a day, it lasts 90 days; at two capsules, 45 days. It is packaged in amber glass, which makes sense for colorants such as the curcuminoids: they fade when exposed to light. Store in a cool, dry place.
