Why the seed is defatted

Milk thistle seeds are rich in fat; a good quarter of their weight is oil. For a highly concentrated extract, this oil has to be removed first, because it would dilute the extract and reduce the percentage.

The seed is therefore first pressed and then defatted before extraction even begins. The oil itself is not waste, but is used as cooking oil. The flavonolignans are not in the oil anyway, but in the fruit’s hard shell.

A rare class of compounds

Flavonolignans are hybrids. A flavonoid, as found in many plants, is firmly linked to a lignan building block, in other words to a molecule from the blueprint of wood. This combination occurs in very few plants.

Silibinin, the main component, itself consists of two spatially different variants that are present side by side in roughly equal proportions. That is why analysis certificates usually list Silibinin A and B, with a total underneath.

How 80 percent is measured

Here, too, what applies to other extracts applies: the figure depends on the method. Older spectrophotometric methods regularly produce higher values for the same material than a chromatographic determination, in which the individual flavonolignans are separated and measured individually.

The European Pharmacopoeia specifies chromatographic determination for milk thistle fruits. Anyone who wants to compare two products with 80 percent should therefore check whether the certificate uses the same method. Without this information, two percentages are only superficially the same.

A thistle that has made it everywhere

Originally native to the Mediterranean region, milk thistle can now be found on every continent except Antarctica. In California and Australia, it is considered an introduced species that spreads rapidly in pastures and is controlled there.

For cultivation, however, it is uncomplicated: it copes with dry, poor soils and is grown, among other places, in Austria, Hungary, Germany, and China. It is harvested when the flower heads have burst open and seed dispersal begins, which makes the harvest time a matter of days.

Our milk thistle capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Häufige Fragen

One capsule daily, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid, taken with a meal. That is all it takes. The link to food is expressly stated in the recommended use.

Silymarin is a mixture of several flavonolignans and the characteristic active ingredient in milk thistle seeds. 80 percent means: 300 mg of extract contains 240 mg of silymarin. For milk thistle products, this is the value you compare when making a comparison. An unstandardized seed powder can contain only a fraction of that at the same milligram amount.

Only the ripe seeds, or botanically correct, the fruits. They are the part of the plant with by far the highest silymarin content; there is hardly any of it in the leaves and stems. A single plant produces several hundred of these shiny brown seeds.

From the strikingly white-veined leaves. According to a medieval legend, the markings were formed when Mary's milk dripped onto the plant. Its botanical name is Silybum marianum, and it belongs to the daisy family, so it is related to artichokes and sunflowers. It was already cultivated in monastery gardens in the Middle Ages.

This capsule provides 300 mg of milk thistle extract and nothing else. Our milk thistle complex contains slightly less at 250 mg, but is supplemented with schisandra, artichoke, and dandelion. If you want milk thistle on its own, choose this product; if you're looking for the combination, choose the complex.

Yes. The ingredients list has two entries: milk thistle extract and the vegetarian capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No anti-caking agents, no flow agents, no colorings or fillers.

Please discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand. This question is especially relevant for milk thistle, because the plant is one of the most extensively studied and there is correspondingly a lot known about it. In pregnancy and while breastfeeding, the decision should also be made by a professional.

The bottle contains 90 capsules and, at one capsule a day, lasts exactly 90 days, or a quarter of a year. It is packed in amber glass, which blocks the UV portion of light. Store in a cool, dry place.
