Nine ingredients with vitamin C, zinc, and selenium

Vitalplant's Immun Complex combines two mushroom extracts, beta-glucans from brewer's yeast, two plant extracts, and three micronutrients. The daily dose is three capsules.

What’s in the daily dose

600 mg turkey tail mushroom extract, standardized to 30 percent polysaccharides. Trametes versicolor is a tree fungus whose concentrically colored fruiting bodies resemble a turkey tail, hence the English name Turkey Tail.

400 mg Yestimun®, a raw material from brewer's yeast with 80 percent beta-glucans. This yields 320 mg beta-glucans. These polysaccharides are found in yeasts, mushrooms, and grains.

300 mg reishi extract, also standardized to 30 percent polysaccharides. Plus 200 mg andrographis extract with 30 percent andrographolide and 200 mg echinacea extract.

The three micronutrients. 160 mg vitamin C from PureWay-C®, 30 mg zinc from bisglycinate, and 80 µg selenium from selenomethionine. Supplemented with 10 mg black pepper extract.

What vitamin C, zinc, and selenium do

Vitamin C, zinc, and selenium all help protect cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin C also helps reduce tiredness and fatigue.

Zinc contributes to normal DNA synthesis and plays a role in cell division. Selenium contributes to normal thyroid function. All stated claims are listed in the EU Register of authorised health claims.

There are no authorised claims for the mushroom and plant extracts. For these, we state the amount and standardization.

Immun Complex capsules: composition and quality

Nine ingredients in one formula, without fillers, anti-caking agents, or colourants. The capsule shell is made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Beta-glucan is not the same as beta-glucan

The name describes only two things: that it is a chain of glucose building blocks and that these are linked in the so-called beta form. It does not say exactly how.

And that is exactly where the sources differ. Beta-glucans from oats and barley are linked at positions 1,3 and 1,4 and form long, water-soluble chains that make liquids viscous. Those from yeast and mushrooms, by contrast, are linked 1,3 and 1,6 and are highly branched. Two groups of substances under one name, which cannot replace each other either chemically or in terms of how they behave.

The turkey tail mushroom

Trametes versicolor is one of the most common mushrooms in European forests and can be found on almost every rotten beech or birch stump. Its thin, semicircular fruiting bodies grow in overlapping, roof-tile-like layers and show concentric color rings, whose pattern varies depending on the wood and the weather.

It is a white rot pathogen and also breaks down the lignin in wood. The enzymes needed for this have given it a second career: in biotechnology, Trametes is used to obtain laccases, among other things for breaking down dyes in wastewater.

Two plants from two continents

Andrographis paniculata is an annual acanthus plant from South and Southeast Asia. Its key active compound, andrographolide, is among the bitterest known plant substances; in English, the plant is simply called King of Bitters.

Echinacea purpurea, the purple coneflower, is a daisy family plant from the prairies of North America and in Europe is best known as a perennial in garden beds. Three species are common in trade, and they differ not only botanically, but also in the plant part used: sometimes the herb, sometimes the root.

What a complex means when adding things up

Nine ingredients in one formula means: you take nine things at the same time, including ones you may already have sitting in the cupboard. That is unproblematic for plant and mushroom extracts, but not for minerals.

Zinc and selenium are the two ingredients for which fixed maximum amounts have been derived, and both are present here in relevant amounts. Anyone taking this complex in addition to a zinc or selenium product, or to a multivitamin, should add up the daily amounts rather than estimate them. A registered branded raw ingredient: beta-glucans from the cell wall of brewer's yeast, standardized to 80 percent. The 400 mg in the daily dose therefore contain 320 mg of pure beta-glucans. They should be distinguished from the beta-glucans in oats and barley, which are chemically structured differently.

Trametes versicolor is a tree fungus found on dead wood in almost every European forest. Its fruiting bodies grow in tile-like, overlapping fans with colorful rings that resemble butterfly wings. In English, it is therefore called turkey tail. At 600 mg per daily dose, it is the largest component by amount.

Yes, at 30 mg in the daily dose, it is in the upper range. That is exactly why we say: Do not take another zinc product at the same time. Our Zinc 25 capsules already provide 25 mg on their own, and Zinc Plus C also contains zinc. The stated recommended intake should not be exceeded, and with several supplements taken in parallel, that can happen quickly.
