Where the ten in the name comes from

A long tail made up of identical building blocks, the isoprene units, is attached to the ring part of the molecule. In humans there are exactly ten of them, hence Q10.

Other organisms build different lengths: baker's yeast produces Q6, the intestinal bacterium Escherichia coli Q8, and rats and mice Q9. So the number is not a dosage indication or a product name, but a structural detail.

Fermented instead of synthesized

Coenzyme Q10 for dietary supplements is now produced mostly using biotechnology: yeasts or bacteria produce it in fermenters, after which it is separated and purified.

That is more than a manufacturing detail. Fermentative production delivers only the all-trans form, which is exactly the arrangement that also occurs in the body. Purely chemical synthesis routes can also produce cis forms that do not occur in nature. Anyone reading analysis certificates will find the all-trans content listed there as a separate test item.

A fat-soluble molecule

The long isoprene tail makes Q10 highly fat-loving. It is practically insoluble in water, but dissolves well in oils. In pure form, it is an orange-yellow crystalline powder.

It is especially sensitive to light, and it melts at just under 50 degrees. Both facts explain the packaging: amber glass instead of a clear container, store in a cool, dry place, not on the windowsill and not next to the stove.

Where Q10 is found in food

The highest levels are found in organ meats, especially heart and liver, then in fatty fish such as sardines and mackerel, in beef, peanuts, sesame, and soybean oil. In plant-based foods it is widespread, but everywhere only in small amounts.

Estimates of daily intake from a mixed diet are in the single-digit milligram range. One capsule of this product contains 200 mg. We state this classification deliberately matter-of-factly: for coenzyme Q10 itself, there is no approved health claim, and an amount listing is not a promise of effect.

Take one capsule daily unchewed with plenty of liquid. No meal is required by the recommended intake, but it is still practical: coenzyme Q10 is fat-soluble and is absorbed better together with some fat from food. Many people therefore take the capsule with breakfast.

200 mg coenzyme Q10 as ubiquinone, plus 100 mg PureWay-C with 95 mg vitamin C. One capsule therefore covers 120 percent of the nutrient reference value for vitamin C. For coenzyme Q10 itself, there is no reference value, because the body produces it itself.

Contains ubiquinone, the oxidized form. Ubiquinol is the same substance in its reduced state; in the body, both continuously convert into each other, which is part of their function in the respiratory chain. Ubiquinone is the much more storage-stable variant, because ubiquinol oxidizes quickly in air. By the way, the name comes from ubiquitous, meaning all-present: the substance occurs in practically every cell in the body.

PureWay-C is a registered trademark for a vitamin C preparation in which ascorbic acid is bound to lipid metabolites. Here, it provides 95 mg of vitamin C per capsule. And it is also the ingredient for which there is something proven to say: Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to reducing tiredness and fatigue, and to protecting cells from oxidative stress.

In the mitochondria, the cells' power plants, where it is part of the respiratory chain. It is found in food mainly in offal, oily fish, and in smaller amounts in nuts and vegetable oils. The body also produces it itself, which is why it is not a vitamin in the strict sense.
