Seven bitter herbs in one capsule

Bitter compounds have largely disappeared from the modern diet. Vegetables have been bred for mildness over decades. Vitalplant’s Bitter Complex brings together seven plants known for their bitter taste.

The seven plants

Turmeric extract, 80 mg, and dandelion, 80 mg. Turmeric is a ginger family plant; the rhizome is used. From dandelion, the whole herb is used, a member of the daisy family that grows in almost every meadow.

Artichoke extract, 50 mg, yarrow, 50 mg, and mugwort herb, 50 mg. All three belong to the daisy family. Mugwort is especially known in Central Europe as a seasoning for hearty roasts.

Hop cones, 33 mg, and centaury, 20 mg. Hops are commonly known as a beer ingredient, and their bitter compounds shape the taste. Centaury belongs to the gentian family, a group known for its pronounced bitterness.

At three capsules a day, this amounts to around 1,089 mg of plant substances.

Why plants taste bitter

Bitter compounds are no accident for the plant. They form as secondary plant substances and make leaves, roots, or flowers unattractive to herbivores. Chemically, they are very different groups of substances: sesquiterpene lactones in dandelion, bitter glycosides in centaury, alpha and beta acids in hops.

There are no approved health claims for the seven plant extracts. That is why we state the amount, plant part, and origin.

Bitter Complex capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of the seven plant ingredients and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Pharmacy.

Twenty-five receptors for one taste

Humans have a single receptor type for sweet. For bitter, there are around twenty-five different ones, each with its own gene. No other taste is so finely differentiated.

The reason is obvious: sweet signals energy, and one messenger is enough for that. Bitter is the warning signal for something potentially indigestible, and warning signals need to be able to recognize many different substances. That is why chemically completely unrelated substances taste equally bitter to us.

Not everything tastes the same

Because there are so many receptor genes, there are also many variants of them. The best-known test uses phenylthiocarbamide: some people find the test strip disgustingly bitter, while others taste nothing at all. The difference lies in a single gene.

The same applies to Brussels sprouts, chicory, grapefruit, and tonic water. Those who reject them are rarely sensitive; they are actually tasting something different from the person sitting across the table.

Seven plants from four families

Four of the seven are members of the daisy family: dandelion, artichoke, yarrow, and mugwort. Mugwort belongs to the genus Artemisia and is therefore a close relative of wormwood, which gave absinthe its name.

Three more come from very different corners of the plant world. Turmeric is a ginger plant, and centaury belongs to the gentian family. And hops are part of the hemp family, so botanically they are related to hemp, even if you would not know it to look at them.

How bitterness is measured

There is no measuring device for bitterness, only comparison. The classic bitterness value indicates how far an extract can be diluted until the bitterness is just barely perceptible, measured against a reference solution of quinine salt. The higher the number, the further one gram goes.

In breweries, the calculation is different: they use International Bitterness Units, which describe the content of converted hop acids in the finished beer. A pilsner is around thirty, a heavily hopped India Pale Ale is twice that or more. Two scales, the same sensation.

Our Bitter Complex Capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Per capsule: 80 mg turmeric extract, 80 mg dandelion powder, 50 mg each of artichoke extract, yarrow herb powder and mugwort herb powder, 33 mg hop cone powder and 20 mg centaury. Seven plants, all with specified amounts.

Because that is exactly the point of the formula. Bitter compounds are defense substances that plants use to protect themselves against herbivores, and humans have around 25 different receptors for them, more than for any other taste. Centaury is one of the bitterest native plants there is. The capsule shell bypasses the taste, which is why the recommendation says to swallow it whole.

Centaurium erythraea, a delicate gentian family plant with pink flowers that grows in poor meadows and at forest edges. Its name refers to its former value: it was considered worth a thousand gold pieces. In Germany, the plant is protected and may not be collected; the raw material comes from cultivation.

The dosage recommendation allows both, which is rather rare for us. In traditional use, bitter herbs are usually taken before meals. Choose the time that you are most likely to remember.

Yes, in three places. We also carry turmeric and artichoke as individual products in significantly larger quantities; dandelion and artichoke are also included in the milk thistle complex. Anyone taking one of these in parallel should add up the amounts.

Yes. The capsule contains the seven plant ingredients and the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose shell, nothing else. No separating agents, no anti-caking agents, no colorants or fillers. Note that mugwort is known to affect people with corresponding pollen allergies; you can find the full details in the Application and Important Notes tab.

The bottle contains 90 capsules. At three capsules per day, it lasts 30 days; at one capsule per day, it lasts 90 days. Packed in amber glass, store in a cool, dry place.
