Frankincense extract with 90 percent boswellic acids

Frankincense is neither an herb nor a root, but a tree resin. The frankincense capsules from Vitalplant contain an extract from the resin of Boswellia serrata, standardized to 90 percent boswellic acids.

How frankincense is obtained

The bark of the tree is carefully scored. At the cut, a milky sap emerges, hardens in the air, and forms tear-shaped pieces. These resin tears are collected by hand after a few weeks.

From old trees. The resin for our extract comes from trees that are at least ten years old. Younger trees produce less and are put under greater strain by scoring.

Boswellic acids as the key measure. They are the characteristic components of Boswellia resin and serve as the standardization value. Our extract is at 90 percent, and one capsule contains 600 mg.

Boswellia serrata: tree and trade history

Boswellia serrata grows in the dry regions of India. Related species are found in Oman, Yemen, and Somalia. The trees are gnarled, grow slowly, and get by with very little water.

For thousands of years, frankincense was among the most valuable trade goods of all. The Frankincense Trail connected South Arabia with the Mediterranean region, and in many cultures the resin was a fixed part of ritual incense burning. It is still used that way today.

Frankincense capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of two components: the frankincense extract and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

An resin, not an herb

Frankincense belongs to the balsam tree family, botanically Burseraceae. Their common feature is resin canals in the bark. Myrrh and the guggul tree, whose resin we also carry, belong to the same family. Boswellia serrata grows in the dry regions of India, often on rocky ground with little soil. The trees stay small, grow slowly, and get by with very little water.

Four species, four profiles

Frankincense is not a uniform commodity. Alongside Boswellia serrata from India, Boswellia sacra from Oman and Yemen, Boswellia papyrifera from Northeast Africa, and Boswellia carterii are traded. The species differ in the proportion and pattern of their boswellic acids, and they smell different when burned.

Anyone comparing frankincense products should therefore pay attention to the species listed. If it only says frankincense without a botanical name, the raw material cannot be classified.

How the resin is harvested

For harvest, the bark is incised with a special knife. At the cut, a milky sap emerges, hardens in the air, and forms teardrop-shaped pieces known as resin tears. After two to three weeks, they are collected by hand, then the same cut is opened again. Several rounds are possible over the course of a season.

This is exactly where sustainability is decided. Incising too often and too deeply weakens the tree and reduces seed production, which has led to declining stands in several growing regions. Our resin therefore comes from trees that are at least ten years old; younger ones yield less and handle the intervention worse.

From resin to extract

Raw frankincense resin is not water-soluble, so an infusion does little. Boswellic acids belong to the triterpenes, a fat-soluble class of compounds, and are extracted from the ground resin using a solvent. The solvent is then removed and the extract is dried.

Standardization to 90 percent boswellic acids describes how much of these key active compounds are contained in the finished extract. 65 percent is also common in trade. Without this specification, a milligram figure alone says little.

Depending on your needs, take one capsule twice daily, up to a maximum of two capsules twice daily, each unchewed with enough liquid with a meal. Spreading the doses across two times is part of the recommendation, not just a matter of convenience.

Boswellic acids are fat-soluble. They are absorbed much better from the gastrointestinal tract when fat is present in the diet at the same time. A meal with a little oil, butter, nuts, or cheese is better for this than a glass of water on an empty stomach. That is why the recommended use explicitly mentions a meal.

Both are within the intended range. Two capsules a day correspond to 1,200 mg of frankincense extract, four capsules to 2,400 mg. Four capsules is the upper limit; there should not be more than that. Anyone just starting out is best off beginning with the smaller amount.

Boswellic acids are the characteristic components of Boswellia resin and serve as the standardization value. Ninety percent means that 600 mg of extract contain around 540 mg of boswellic acids. Extracts with 65 percent are widespread in the market, so when comparing, it is worth looking at this figure and not just the milligrams.

The bottle contains 120 capsules. At two capsules a day, it lasts 60 days; at four capsules, 30 days. Depending on how you dose it, one bottle is therefore a one- or two-month supply.

Von Boswellia-serrata-Bäumen aus den trockenen Regionen Indiens, und zwar von Exemplaren, die mindestens zehn Jahre alt sind. Zur Ernte wird die Rinde kontrolliert eingeritzt; an der Schnittstelle tritt ein milchiger Saft aus, der an der Luft zu tropfenförmigen Harztränen erhärtet.
