With OPC products, the figures vary considerably because different measuring methods produce different results. That is why Vitalplant OPC capsules state not only the content but also the method.

What OPC is and how it is measured

OPC stands for oligomeric proanthocyanidins. These are compounds from the flavonoid group, found in grape seeds, pine bark, and many red fruits. Oligomeric means that several similar building blocks have linked together to form a chain.

95 percent according to UV. The specification according to UV refers to determination by UV spectrophotometry. Other methods such as the Bate-Smith method produce different values for the same raw material. A comparison between products is only meaningful if the same method is used.

Where the raw material comes from

Grape seeds are a by-product of winemaking. After pressing, skins, stems, and seeds remain behind, known as pomace. The seeds are separated, dried, and then extracted.

The raw material is therefore a by-product of the wine industry that would otherwise hardly be used. Drying and extraction are crucial for quality because flavonoids are sensitive to heat and oxygen.

OPC capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of three ingredients: grape seed extract, black pepper extract, and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no flow agents, no colorants. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

What oligomer literally means

Proanthocyanidins are chains made up of the same building blocks over and over, mainly catechin and epicatechin. How many are linked together determines the name. Oligomer, from the Greek oligos meaning few, refers to short chains of about two to five units. When there are more, they are called polymers, or tannins in everyday language.

The difference can be tasted: short chains taste mildly bitter, long ones make the mouth pucker, like a very young red wine or strong black tea. Every grape seed extract contains both fractions side by side, just in different proportions.

A term from French chemistry

The abbreviation OPC goes back to the French chemist Jacques Masquelier, who began working on this group of substances in the 1940s, first in the red skins of peanuts, later in pine bark, and finally in grape seeds.

The fact that grape seed and pine bark have remained the two commercial sources to this day is therefore less a botanical than a historical fact in research. Proanthocyanidins occur in very many plants, from apple peel to cocoa to aronia berries.

The grape seed as a raw material

A seed makes up only a few percent of the weight of a grape berry, and each berry usually contains two to four of them. To obtain meaningful amounts, you need the scale of an entire wine industry.

Two very different products can be obtained from the same seed: if it is pressed, grape seed oil is produced, a cooking oil. If, on the other hand, it is extracted with an aqueous solvent, the oil remains behind and the water-soluble flavonoids go into solution. So grape seed oil and grape seed extract are not two names for the same thing.

Why black pepper is in the formula

Piper nigrum is a tropical climbing plant whose fruits grow in spike-like clusters. What is sold as peppercorns is botanically a drupe; black, white, and green pepper all come from the same plant and differ only in ripeness and processing.

The alkaloid piperine is responsible for the heat. Our black pepper extract is standardized to it: 5 mg of extract with 95 percent piperine yields around 4.75 mg of the pure substance. For comparison: a heaped teaspoon of ground pepper, depending on the variety, comes to about twenty times that amount.
