Skin, hair, and nails are largely made up of keratin, and the body continually rebuilds them. The Skin Hair Nails capsules from Vitalplant provide twelve nutrients in a single daily capsule.

What’s in the daily capsule

Horsetail extract, 290 mg. The extract is standardized to seven percent silica. Horsetail is one of the oldest still-existing plant genera and stores silica in unusually high concentrations in its cell walls.

Acerola extract, 90 mg. This provides 23 mg of natural vitamin C, which corresponds to 28 percent of the nutrient reference value. The acerola cherry is one of the fruits richest in vitamin C.

Ten vitamins and minerals. Biotin at 720 micrograms, zinc at 5 mg, plus niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin A, E, B1, B2, B6, B12, and folic acid. Ten of these are at 100 percent of the nutrient reference value or above.

What the nutrients do

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin. Collagen is the structural protein that gives connective tissue its strength.

Niacin, vitamin A, and riboflavin contribute to the maintenance of normal skin. Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Zinc contributes to normal DNA synthesis and normal protein synthesis.

Why burned hair smells of sulfur

Keratin is a fibrous protein, and hair and nails are made of the hard variant. Its hallmark is a high proportion of the amino acid cysteine, which carries a sulfur atom. Every two of these sulfur atoms join to form a bridge and rivet the protein fibers together across the width.

These disulfide bridges make the difference between soft and hard keratin, and they are also the reason for the characteristic smell when a hair gets into a candle flame. A perm is based on the same principle: the bridges are chemically opened, the hair is shaped, and the bridges are closed again in a new position.

Everything grows slowly

Scalp hair grows by about one centimeter a month, fingernails by around three millimeters, toenails by about one. The epidermis renews itself completely in about four weeks.

That means it takes a fingernail around half a year to grow out fully, and a toenail much longer. What is formed at the nail root today therefore does not reach the nail tip until the next half-year. These time spans are biologically predetermined and cannot be shortened.

Micrograms, milligrams, and the lab value

The twelve nutrients in this formula are widely separated in terms of amounts. For biotin, the reference table lists 50 micrograms; for niacin, 16 milligrams, more than 300 times as much. Both are B vitamins, and both amounts are correct.

Biotin has one practical feature that is rarely mentioned: higher doses of biotin can distort certain lab tests because many test methods use biotin as an auxiliary molecule. This affects, among other things, thyroid and heart values. That is why laboratories and doctors' offices often ask people to stop taking biotin-containing supplements a few days before a blood draw. So anyone going for an examination should mention this product.

Vitamin A has two faces

Vitamin A comes in two forms. As preformed retinol, it is found in liver, eggs, and dairy products, as well as in supplements. As beta-carotene, it is found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and dark green vegetables; the body produces vitamin A from it as needed and stops the conversion when enough is available.

That does not apply to the preformed form, because it is fat-soluble and stored in the liver. For this reason, a tolerable total intake has been derived for it, and that is why it is given special attention during pregnancy. Anyone who is pregnant or trying to become pregnant should add up the vitamin A amounts from all supplements taken and discuss this with a doctor.
