Panax ginseng—the natural vitality booster
Ginseng is a Chinese medicinal herb that has been used in Asia for centuries and is becoming increasingly popular elsewhere, including here. Some claim it can boost energy, alertness, and memory and have a positive effect on blood sugar, digestion, heart health, and immune function.
Sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it?
The root of PANAX GINSENG, known as Korean or Asian ginseng, has been a valuable and important folk remedy in East Asian countries, including China, Korea, and Japan, for more than 2,000 years. Panax comes from the word "panacea", meaning a cure for all diseases and a source of longevity as well as physical strength and resilience.
Ginseng from the perspective of Chinese medicine

To understand the health claims about ginseng, it helps to know some basics of Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) focuses on the well-being of the whole body. It is seen as a complement (but not a replacement) to conventional medicine.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, the body contains Yin and Yang energies. Yang is the energizing fire in the body, and Yin is the nourishing fluid.
Asian ginseng boosts energy and vitality. This is because it strengthens or invigorates Qi (Chi), or life energy. In Chinese herbal medicine, Asian ginseng is also called the “King of Herbs” because it strengthens all vital organs.
The Yang-boosting effect of Asian ginseng may help sharpen attention and concentration. A study of people taking Korean red ginseng found a possible improvement in cognitive function. [1]

Study results suggest the herb has potential to strengthen heart health, but the effect is not clearly understood or confirmed. [2]
The connection between ginseng and improved immune system function has long been well documented. Its Qi-tonifying effect strengthens the body's ability to ward off illness. [3]
Ginseng can also strengthen and fortify the lungs. This can be beneficial for people with cough or asthma. [5]
Ginseng in modern science and medicine

Some evidence suggests that ginseng may lower cholesterol levels, which contributes to atherosclerosis or plaque buildup in the arteries. Atherosclerosis increases the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and heart attack.
A study published in 2016 found that ginseng helps people with type 2 diabetes lower triglycerides (blood fats), total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol). Taking ginseng had no effect on HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol). [6]
A study published in 2022 found that people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes lowered their total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol when they took at least 2 grams of Asian ginseng per day. [7]
This research is promising, but further studies are needed to determine how well ginseng affects blood sugar levels.
Ginseng is an adaptogen, or a natural substance intended to help the body cope with stress. [8]
The plant also has antioxidant properties, called ginsenosides, which can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress that damage cells. [9]

Ginseng appears to have stimulating properties in laboratory tests. The plant can stimulate the nervous system and help you feel more alert and energetic. [10]
Current research also focuses on participants who suffer from fatigue due to cancer or other illnesses. [11]
Ginseng is often recommended as an alternative therapy for treating and preventing colds and flu. Research has shown that the root of Asian ginseng has antibacterial and antiviral properties. [12]
A study published in 2021 with 100 healthy adults found that taking 2g of Asian ginseng daily for eight weeks helped increase immune cell levels. [13]
