Guggul resin extract with 5 percent guggulsterones

Like frankincense and myrrh, guggul is a tree resin, not an herb and not a root. The Guggul Extract capsules from Vitalplant contain a standardized resin extract with 5 percent guggulsterones.

How guggul is obtained

The resin comes from Commiphora wightii, a thorny shrub from the dry regions of India and Pakistan. The bark is incised, and the sap that emerges hardens in the air into yellowish-brown lumps. These are collected and further processed.

Guggulsterone as a measure. They are the characteristic components of the resin and serve as the standardization value. At 500 mg extract per capsule and a standardization of 5 percent, this results in 25 mg guggulsterones.

Why standardization matters especially here. Natural resins vary considerably in composition depending on the tree, location, and harvest year. A standardized extract compensates for these fluctuations.

Commiphora wightii: plant and extraction

The guggul shrub rarely grows higher than four meters and withstands long dry periods. It belongs to the family of balsam trees, the same family as frankincense and myrrh.

Guggul has long been known in Ayurvedic herbal medicine and is also called Guggulu there. Because the populations regenerate slowly, the raw material is now increasingly sourced from controlled cultivation instead of wild harvesting.

Guggul Extract capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of two components: the guggul resin extract and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorings. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

A gum resin consists of three parts

Like frankincense and myrrh, guggul belongs to the gum resins, technically oleo-gum resins. The name describes its composition: a gum fraction that swells in water, a resin fraction that dissolves in alcohol, and a small proportion of essential oil that provides the scent.

For an extract, this three-part structure is crucial, because the guggulsterones are located in the resin fraction. An aqueous extract would mainly capture the gum fraction and largely leave behind the key active compounds. The choice of solvent therefore determines not nuances, but whether the desired substance ends up in the extract at all.

A shrub that almost disappeared

Commiphora wightii is listed as highly endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List. The reason is the harvesting itself: for decades it was tapped too often and too deeply, and many shrubs did not survive.

India has therefore restricted wild harvesting and promoted cultivation in plantations. A shrub needs eight to ten years before it can be tapped at all, and then several years of rest. Anyone who buys guggul is buying a raw material where the question of origin is not just a question of quality.

How tapping works

Harvesting takes place during the dry season. The bark is cut in several places, the milky sap escapes and hardens in the air into irregular lumps, which are collected after a few days.

The yield is low; a single shrub produces only a few hundred grams in one season. That explains both the price and why the temptation to overuse it was so great. The crude resin is then cleaned of bark, sand, and insect remnants before it even goes into extraction.

E and Z, two forms of the same key compound

Guggulsterone occurs in two spatial forms, known as E-guggulsterone and Z-guggulsterone. They differ only in the orientation around a double bond, but they are two different substances with their own analytical values.

In test certificates, they are therefore usually listed individually and below that as a total. Anyone comparing two extracts with 5 percent each should check whether the same reference value is meant: the sum of both forms or only one of them. Here, the stated value refers to the total.

Our Guggul extract capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid, with a meal. One capsule provides 500 mg guggul resin extract, two capsules provide 1,000 mg accordingly. Those who are just starting should begin with one capsule.

Guggulsterones are the characteristic ingredients of guggul resin and serve as the standardization value. 5 percent means that 500 mg of extract contain 25 mg of guggulsterones. Without this information, a resin extract cannot be meaningfully compared with another.

They are two different resins from the same plant family. Our frankincense comes from Boswellia serrata and is standardized to 90 percent boswellic acids. Guggul comes from Commiphora and is standardized to guggulsterones. Related in origin, different in ingredients.

Yes. The ingredients list has two entries: guggul resin extract and the vegan capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No release agents, no anti-caking agents, no colorings or fillers.

When opening the jar, you notice the resinous, spicy aroma that is characteristic of Guggul and reminiscent of myrrh. The capsule shell encloses it when swallowed. By contrast, anyone who opens a capsule gets the full bitter resin flavor. That is why the recommendation says to swallow it whole.

Please discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand. This applies to concentrated plant extracts in general. During pregnancy and while breastfeeding, this decision also belongs in professional hands.

The bottle contains 120 capsules. At one capsule per day, it lasts 120 days; at two capsules, 60 days. Packed in amber glass, store in a cool, dry place and reseal well after each use.
