Five ingredients that together add up to exactly 15 g

Pre Workout+ from Vitalplant contains L-citrulline malate, creatine monohydrate, L-glutamine, L-taurine, and acetyl-L-carnitine. Nothing else, and that can be verified.

The math adds up

Each serving contains 5 g L-citrulline malate, 4 g creatine monohydrate, 4 g L-glutamine, 1.5 g L-taurine, and 0.5 g acetyl-L-carnitine in the scoop. Added together, that makes exactly 15 g, and exactly 15 g is one serving.

So there is no remainder for carriers, flavorings, colorings, or sweeteners. And there is no catch-all ingredient hiding unknown amounts. Each ingredient is listed with its amount.

What we are allowed to say about it

Of the five ingredients, exactly one carries an EU-approved health claim: Creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3 g creatine. The claim applies to adults performing high-intensity exercise.

That threshold is met here. Creatine monohydrate contains bound crystal water, which is why 4 g monohydrate correspond to around 3.5 g of pure creatine.

No claim is approved for citrulline, glutamine, taurine, or acetyl-L-carnitine. We are not repeating what is circulated about them on forums and labels. Instead, we state the amounts so you can compare them with what you already know.

Caffeine-free, and what that means

Most pre-workout products get their noticeable effect from caffeine, often in amounts of 200 mg or more. This one contains none.

That has two consequences. First, the powder also works for training late in the evening without costing you the night. Second, the familiar kick many people look for in a pre-workout is missing. If that is what you expect, you will not find it here.

If you also use our creatine powder or glutamine powder, you should add the amounts together: both ingredients are already included here at 4 g per serving.

Vitalplant is led by Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Citrulline malate is not the same as citrulline

Citrulline malate is a compound made from the amino acid citrulline and malic acid. So the malate is not an additive, but part of the molecule, and it adds weight.

Two ratios are common on the market, 2:1 and 1:1, meaning two or one citrulline per malic acid. In the 2:1 type, around 72 percent of the mass is citrulline, while in the 1:1 type it is only about 57. The same number of grams can therefore mean very different amounts of citrulline depending on the form. If you are comparing products, you should look for the ratio.

Taurine and the most persistent legend

The name leads to a misunderstanding that has lasted for decades. Taurine was first isolated from ox bile in 1827, hence the reference to the Latin taurus. However, taurine in foods has nothing to do with bulls.

Industrial taurine is produced entirely synthetically from simple chemical raw materials and is therefore vegan. Chemically, it is not a usual amino acid at all, but an amino sulfonic acid, which is why it is not built into proteins. In nature, it occurs abundantly in fish, meat, and seafood.

Why the acetyl group sits on carnitine

Carnitine owes its name to the Latin caro for flesh, because it was isolated from muscle tissue in 1905. To this day, red meat is by far the richest food source.

Pure L-carnitine attracts water strongly and quickly clumps in powder form. That is why it is usually used either as tartrate or, as here, in acetylated form. Both flow better and are more stable in storage. The same applies here: the added group weighs too, so a gram of acetyl-L-carnitine contains less carnitine than the same gram of the pure substance.

Why such powders otherwise contain flavors

Pure amino acids do not taste neutral. Citrulline malate is distinctly sour because of the malic acid, taurine is slightly bitter, creatine is almost tasteless but gritty. Together, that makes a drink nobody would drink for pleasure.

That is exactly why most products of this kind contain flavors, acidifiers, colorants, and sweeteners, and those take up space in the scoop. A powder without them tastes like what is inside. In practical terms, that also means: all five ingredients attract moisture, which is why the bag should stay closed and the scoop should be kept dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mix 15 g of powder, about one slightly heaped measuring spoon, with 300 ml of water and drink about 30 minutes before training. The time lead is specified in the usage recommendation.

Of the five ingredients, exactly one carries an approved claim: creatine increases physical performance during speed-strength training in the context of short-term, intense physical exercise. The beneficial effect occurs with a daily intake of 3 g of creatine, and the claim is intended for adults who engage in intense physical exercise. This threshold is met here: 4 g of monohydrate corresponds to around 3.5 g of pure creatine.

Because it deliberately does without. Most pre-workout products get their noticeable effect from caffeine, often with 200 mg or more. That has two consequences: first, this powder also works for a workout late in the evening without costing you the night. Second, it lacks the familiar kick that many people use to judge a pre-workout. Anyone expecting that won’t find it here.

5 g L-citrulline malate, 4 g creatine monohydrate, 4 g L-glutamine, 1.5 g L-taurine, and 0.5 g acetyl-L-carnitine. Altogether, that comes to exactly 15 g, and exactly 15 g is one serving. So there is no room left for carriers, flavors, colorings, or sweeteners, and there is no catch-all item hiding unknown amounts.

Noticeably tart, which is due to the malate, the salt of malic acid. The formula contains no flavors or sweeteners, because the 15 g consist entirely of the five ingredients. If you prefer a milder taste, mix the powder into juice instead of water.

The recommended intake explicitly refers to the time before the workout. The approved creatine dosage, in turn, assumes training: without a training stimulus, there is nothing to enhance. On days without training, intake is therefore not intended.

Then add it all up. One serving of Pre Workout+ already contains 4 g creatine monohydrate and 4 g L-glutamine. Our creatine powder provides 5 g monohydrate per serving, and the glutamine powder 5 g L-glutamine. Anyone taking both in parallel quickly reaches double the amount.

The bag contains 450 g and is enough for 30 servings at 15 g per serving. How long it lasts depends on how often you train: with three sessions per week, that’s a little over two months. Packaged in a resealable stand-up pouch; store in a cool, dry place.
