For collagen and collagen peptides, there is no approved health claim in the European Union. The European Food Safety Authority has not approved the relevant applications. Collagen is not a protein powder

This misconception comes up often, especially among sporty active people. Collagen is a protein — but it is still not suitable as a protein source for building muscle.

The amino acid profile

Collagen is unusually composed: about every third amino acid is glycine, with high amounts of proline and hydroxyproline as well. What is missing is tryptophan — an essential amino acid. The proportion of branched-chain amino acids, which are a focus in strength training, is also low.

What that means in practice
