Acerola extract with 25 percent natural vitamin C

Vitamin C can be produced synthetically or obtained from plants. Vitalplant's acerola capsules take the second route: the vitamin C comes entirely from acerola cherry extract.

What’s in a capsule

500 mg acerola extract. The extract is standardized to a vitamin C content of 25 percent. 500 mg of extract provides 125 mg of vitamin C per capsule, which corresponds to 156 percent of the nutrient reference value.

The acerola cherry. Malpighia glabra is a shrub from Central America and the Caribbean. The fruits look like cherries, but botanically they are not related. They spoil quickly and are therefore processed soon after harvesting.

Only two ingredients. Besides the extract, the capsule contains only the shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No added ascorbic acid powder, no fillers.

What vitamin C does

Vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal energy-yielding metabolism. It also contributes to normal function of the nervous system and normal psychological function.

Vitamin C helps protect cells from oxidative stress and supports normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones, cartilage, and blood vessels. Vitamin C also increases iron absorption.

Acerola capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of two components: acerola extract and the capsule shell. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

A cherry that isn’t one

Acerola belongs to the Malpighiaceae family, named after the Italian anatomist Marcello Malpighi. True cherries, by contrast, belong to the rose family, making them related to apples, plums, and almonds. The resemblance ends with their appearance.

This becomes visible in the fruit itself: it is slightly three-lobed and contains not one stone, but three winged seeds. In German-speaking regions, it is also called Barbados cherry or West Indian cherry, which refers to its native Caribbean and Central American origins.

Why the fruit does not make it to Europe fresh

Ripe acerolas are extremely soft and spoil within a few days. They are handpicked and processed within hours, usually into juice or puree, which is then spray-dried.

Added to this is a peculiarity that contradicts common sense: the vitamin C content is highest when the fruit is half-ripe and still greenish, and it drops as the fruit turns redder. It is therefore deliberately harvested before full ripeness, which rules out transport anyway.

What 25 percent means

Dried acerola powder without further processing contains about 17 percent vitamin C, depending on the batch. Higher standardization is achieved by concentrating it and adjusting each batch to a fixed target value.

An extract with 25 percent is therefore not the same as ground dried fruit, and neither is the same as the fruit itself. Anyone comparing two acerola products should look at three details: extract or powder, the percentage, and whether this should be read as vitamin C or as the amount of extract.

How much fruit that is in real terms

Fresh acerolas contain roughly 1,500 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams, depending on the variety and ripeness. The 125 mg in a capsule therefore corresponds to about eight grams of fresh fruit, or around two small berries.

For comparison: an orange contains around 50 milligrams per 100 grams. So you would need about a quarter kilo of oranges for the same amount. This range, more than thirty times as much, is why this one fruit has become a raw material at all.
