Vitamin C is one of the most thoroughly researched vitamins of all. Vitalplant’s Vitamin C 1000 capsules do not rely on pure ascorbic acid, but on PureWay-C®, a trademarked vitamin C complex.

What makes PureWay-C special

Vitamin C with citrus bioflavonoids. In PureWay-C®, ascorbic acid is combined with bioflavonoids from citrus fruits. In the fruit, both also occur together, which is why this approach comes closer to the natural matrix than isolated ascorbic acid.

500 mg Vitamin C per capsule, which corresponds to 625 percent of the nutrient reference value. With two capsules daily, that is 1,000 mg.

The body does not store Vitamin C. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, there is no significant reserve. Excess Vitamin C is excreted via the kidneys, which is why intake should be daily.

What Vitamin C does

Vitamin C helps reduce tiredness and fatigue and supports normal energy metabolism. It contributes to the normal function of the nervous system and normal psychological function.

Vitamin C helps protect cells from oxidative stress and supports normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones, cartilage, teeth, and blood vessels. In addition, Vitamin C increases iron absorption and helps regenerate the reduced form of Vitamin E.

Vitamin C 1000 capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of two components: PureWay-C® and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorings. The product is vegan and gluten-free, packaged in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

A gene that humans lack

Almost all mammals produce ascorbic acid themselves, in the liver and from glucose. Dogs, cats, cattle, and mice do not depend on any external source.

In humans, it is different, and the reason is well studied: a functional enzyme is missing for the final step of this synthesis. The blueprint for it is still present in the genetic material, but has been disabled by mutations. The same applies to the other dry-nosed primates, to guinea pigs, and to some species of bats. All of these species originally lived where fruit was available year-round.

Where the vitamin C in capsules comes from

Practically all of the world's vitamin C is made from glucose in several steps, at least one of which is carried out by bacteria. The process goes back to the Swiss chemist Tadeus Reichstein and has been revised several times since the 1930s; today, two-stage fermentation predominates.

The same is true for most products that call themselves natural. The real exceptions are extracts from acerola cherry, rose hip, or camu-camu, which are correspondingly many times more expensive and provide only a fraction of the amount.

Not all ascorbic acid is a vitamin

Only the L form is vitamin-active, chemically L-ascorbic acid. Its mirror image is called D-isoascorbic acid or erythorbic acid and carries the food additive number E 315.

It is used in sausages and canned foods because it also protects well against oxygen, but it has virtually no vitamin activity. Two molecules with the same molecular formula, built as mirror images, and only one of them counts. On ingredient lists, they appear inconspicuously side by side.

The most sensitive of all vitamins

Vitamin C reacts to just about everything: heat, light, oxygen in the air, traces of copper and iron, and every cut surface. When cooking in plenty of water, a significant portion also passes into the cooking water, because the vitamin is water-soluble.

That is why vegetables cooked briefly or steamed, and freshly cut fruit, provide more than food stored for a long time and cooked for a long time. And that is why vitamin C in capsules is stored in brown glass: light and oxygen are no minor matter here.

Take 2 capsules daily, swallowed whole, with plenty of liquid and with a meal. The 1000 in the product name refers to this daily dose: two capsules at 500 mg each provide 1,000 mg of vitamin C. It is best to divide them between two meals.

Because vitamin C is water-soluble and not stored. Absorption in the intestine happens via transporters, which become saturated with large single doses; anything beyond that is excreted. Two portions spread throughout the day are therefore more practical than 1,000 mg at once.

A registered trademark for a vitamin C preparation in which the ascorbic acid is bound to lipid metabolites, i.e. fat-like accompanying substances. There are especially many approved claims for vitamin C. It contributes to the normal function of the immune system, to reducing tiredness and fatigue, to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones, cartilage, teeth, and blood vessels, to normal energy metabolism, and to protecting cells from oxidative stress. It also increases iron absorption.

The quantity and the source. These capsules provide 1,000 mg of vitamin C per day from the branded ingredient PureWay-C. Our acerola capsules provide 250 mg per day, but from a natural fruit extract with the co-nutrients of the acerola cherry. If you're looking for the higher amount, choose these; if you prefer a fruit-based source, choose acerola.

It is an intentionally high dosage, well above the reference intake of 80 mg. Vitamin C is water-soluble, and the body excretes excess amounts through the kidneys. Very large single doses can irritate the intestines in sensitive people; this is also why splitting it into two capsules makes sense. The stated recommended daily intake should not be exceeded.

Calculate the amounts together: Vitamin C is also found in acerola, zinc plus C, the immune complex, the vein complex, the heart complex, the coenzyme Q10 capsules, and iron glycinate. A sensible combination, however, is with iron, because vitamin C increases its absorption.
