Vitamin D3 from lichens, dissolved in MCT oil

Vitamin D3 usually comes from lanolin, the wool fat of sheep. Instead, Vitalplant’s Vitamin D3 + K2 drops use lichens as the source and are therefore purely plant-based.

What’s in a drop

25 µg vitamin D3, which corresponds to 1,000 IU and 500 percent of the nutrient reference value. One drop a day is enough, so a 30-ml bottle lasts a long time.

Vitamin D3 from lichens. Lichens are not plants in the strict sense, but a symbiotic community of fungus and algae. They produce cholecalciferol, the same form of vitamin D found in human skin under sunlight. The difference from lanolin is not in the molecule, but in its source.

20 µg vitamin K2 as all-trans MK7, 27 percent of the nutrient reference value. All-trans describes the spatial arrangement of the molecule and is the form found in the body.

MCT oil as a carrier. Vitamins D and K are fat-soluble and need a fat as a solvent. Medium-chain triglycerides usually come from coconut and are liquid at room temperature.

What vitamin D and vitamin K do

Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal muscle function, and normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus.

Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal blood clotting. Both claims are listed in the EU Register of authorized health claims.

Vitamin D3 + K2 drops: composition and quality

The formula consists of three ingredients: MCT oil, vitamin D3 from lichens, and vitamin K2. No preservatives, no flavorings, no colorings. Oils are sensitive to light, which is why they are bottled in amber glass. Every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Two living beings, one organism

A lichen is not a species, but an association: a fungus forms the framework and provides support and moisture, while an alga or a cyanobacterium carries out photosynthesis in it. What looks like a single organism is at least two.

Lichens grow extremely slowly, often only millimeters per year, and have no roots. Everything they absorb, they draw from the air. That is exactly why they are used in environmental monitoring as indicators of air quality, and exactly why the origin of raw materials for dietary supplements matters: wild harvesting by a road would be the opposite of a good idea.

Why MCT oil as a carrier

Medium-chain triglycerides consist mainly of caprylic and capric acid, that is, fatty acids with eight and ten carbon atoms. They are obtained from coconut or palm kernel oil by fractionation, in which the fatty acids are separated by chain length.

As a carrier, they are ideal for a chemical reason: they contain no double bonds and therefore hardly go rancid, unlike linseed oil, for example. Add to that a very neutral taste and the property of staying liquid even in the refrigerator. Olive oil would not do either.

Why drops and not capsules

Drops come without a capsule shell and can be dosed more precisely. Here, the oil is not an ingredient alongside others, but the solvent itself: the fat-soluble vitamins are dissolved in it, not just mixed in.

There are two things to keep in mind when dosing. The bottle should be held upright while dripping, otherwise the drop size will vary. And oil stored cold is more viscous and drips more slowly, which tempts you to help it along. Waiting briefly is the better solution than shaking.

Vitamin K in the kitchen

K1 is found mainly in green leaves: kale, spinach, chard, broccoli, parsley, and chives are at the top, along with some vegetable oils. Anyone who eats green vegetables takes in plenty of it.

K2 is a different story, because it is produced by bacteria. By far the largest amount is found in Japanese natto, fermented soybeans. In Europe, aged cheese, especially Gouda and Edam types, as well as quark, egg yolk, and liver are the usual sources. So if you like neither natto nor aged cheese, your selection for K2 is much narrower than for K1.

Yes, and that is by no means a given with vitamin D3. Commercially available cholecalciferol is derived from lanolin, i.e. the wool fat of sheep. Our D3, by contrast, comes from lichens, as explicitly stated in the specification sheet. MCT oil from coconut is used as the carrier oil, and vitamin K2 is plant-based anyway.

The drops provide 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily and 20 µg of K2, dissolved in oil and without needing to swallow a capsule. Our vitamin D3+ capsules are available with 2,000 and 4,000 IU, are taken less often, but contain 200 µg of K2 and additional magnesium. In short: drops for the daily, swallow-free option, capsules for more vitamin K2 and the magnesium content.

Both are above the threshold of 15 percent of the nutrient reference value. MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, a fat with shorter fatty acid chains than in ordinary vegetable oil. It is liquid at room temperature, practically flavorless, and significantly more oxidation-stable than polyunsaturated oils. For a product that is used drop by drop over months, that is exactly the decisive point.

MK7 is the long-chain form of vitamin K2, which remains available in the body longer than the short-chain MK4. All-trans refers to the spatial arrangement of the molecule: only this variant is biologically active; the cis form is not. Inexpensive K2 raw materials often contain a mixture, which is why the all-trans specification matters when comparing products.

The bottle contains 30 ml. At the usual drop size of around 20 drops per milliliter, that works out mathematically to about 600 drops, so at one drop a day it provides a supply for well over a year. It is bottled in amber glass because both vitamin D and vitamin K are light-sensitive. Store in a cool, dry place.
