Organic Ashwagandha Capsules with KSM-66 from the Pure Root

Ashwagandha has only been a familiar name in Europe for a few years, whereas in India the plant has been cultivated for centuries. Vitalplant’s Organic Ashwagandha Capsules use KSM-66, a trademarked extract made from the pure root.

Why only the root

Ashwagandha, botanically Withania somnifera, belongs to the nightshade family. The plant grows up to one and a half meters tall and bears small orange-red berries, which have earned it the nickname winter cherry. Depending on the manufacturer, extracts may use roots, leaves, or both.

KSM-66 uses only the root. Leaves and berries are left out. This is more labor-intensive because the yield per plant is lower, but it corresponds to the plant part that has been passed down in Indian herbal tradition.

From controlled organic cultivation. The raw material comes from non-EU agriculture and is certified under the EU Organic Regulation, inspection body number DE-ÖKO-039. This means verified growing conditions without synthetic pesticides and without genetic engineering.

Withania somnifera: origin and name

Ashwagandha thrives in dry, warm regions and is cultivated mainly in India. The root is harvested after about six months, then washed, cut, and dried.

The name comes from Sanskrit and is made up of ashva for horse and gandha for smell. It refers to the strong, earthy smell of the fresh root, which really does resemble a stable. This scent is no longer noticeable in the extract.

Organic Ashwagandha Capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of two ingredients: organic ashwagandha root extract and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. The product is vegan and gluten-free. It is filled into light-protective amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

A nightshade plant

Withania somnifera belongs to the nightshade family and is therefore botanically related to tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and peppers. This small shrub grows in the dry regions of India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Its fruits are small red berries enclosed in a papery, inflated calyx, very much like physalis from the same family. In German, the plant is therefore also called sleeping berry or winter cherry. The name Ashwagandha comes from Sanskrit and is made up of ashva for horse and gandha for smell: the fresh root has a very strong odor.

Root or leaf, that's the difference

The plant's characteristic active compounds are withanolides, a group of steroidal lactones. Their pattern differs clearly between the root and the leaf.

Leaf material is produced abundantly during cultivation and is cheaper, which is why it is processed into some extracts. Our raw material is a pure root extract. Anyone comparing products will find the key clue in the ingredients list: if it only says Ashwagandha extract without specifying the plant part, it remains unclear what was processed.

What's behind the brand name

KSM-66® is not a synonym for Ashwagandha, but a protected branded ingredient from an Indian manufacturer. It is grown under contract farming, and according to the manufacturer the extraction is water-based without alcoholic solvents, and each batch is tested for a specified withanolide content.

A branded ingredient costs more than anonymous goods. What you get for that is traceability back to the field and a certificate of analysis for each batch. With an extract that has no information on origin or content, both are missing.

Organic in an extract

Our Ashwagandha is certified organic, inspection body DE-ÖKO-039, agriculture outside the EU. With an extract, this means more than it does for the raw herb: not only the cultivation, but the entire chain including the extraction step must be certified.

Since extraction concentrates by a factor of ten or more, unwanted residues are concentrated to the same degree. That is exactly why organic certification is especially relevant for root extracts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily with enough liquid with a meal. The meal is included intentionally in the recommendation: some people tolerate ashwagandha extract less well on an empty stomach. A consistent time helps more than the exact clock time itself.

Both are within the intended range. One capsule provides 500 mg of extract, two provide 1,000 mg accordingly. Those who are just starting out should sensibly begin with one capsule and stick with it for a while before moving up to two.

KSM-66 is a registered trademark for an ashwagandha extract derived exclusively from the root, not from leaves or the whole plant. The manufacturing process is fixed and works without alcohol as an extraction solvent. The advantage of such a branded raw material lies in its reproducibility: every batch goes through the same process.

Withania somnifera is a small shrub from the nightshade family, so it is related to tomato, potato, and pepper. It grows in dry regions of India, North Africa, and the Middle East. In our products, only the root is used. The German name Schlafbeere is derived from the species name somnifera, which literally means sleep-inducing.
