Too tough and too bitter to eat

Organic Reishi capsules from Vitalplant contain extract from Ganoderma lucidum. Unlike shiitake or hericium, this mushroom never ends up in the pan, and there is a simple reason for that.

The glossy bracket fungus

The German name describes it exactly. The cap looks lacquered, kidney-shaped, reddish-brown to almost black, with a stem attached to the side. It grows on hardwood stumps, in Europe preferably on oak.

Its flesh is corky, woody, and extremely bitter. It cannot be chewed or fried. In East Asia, it has therefore long been boiled down or extracted, never used as an edible mushroom.

In China it is called Lingzhi and has appeared as a motif in painting, textiles, and architecture for around two thousand years. The name Reishi comes from Japanese and has become established in the West.

Two thousand years of tradition, zero approved claims

As long as the tradition is, the list of what we are allowed to claim is just as short: it is empty. For mushroom extracts, there is no approved health claim in the EU.

A long tradition is not proof, and we do not use it as a substitute for one. What we do state is the species, the amount of extract, and the origin.

Dosage compared and quality

At 300 mg of extract per capsule, Reishi is the lowest-dosed single mushroom in our range. Chaga and shiitake are at 500 mg, hericium and cordyceps at 400 mg per capsule. The comparison is worthwhile before judging products by capsule count alone.

The extract powder comes from certified organic cultivation, control body number DE-ÖKO-039, origin non-EU agriculture. The capsule contains nothing but extract and the vegan shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. Amber glass protects the contents from UV light.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Allergens: According to the raw material specification, it contains no allergens requiring labeling pursuant to Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011. However, mushroom extracts may naturally contain traces of sulfites.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

A polypore, not a gilled mushroom

Ganoderma lucidum belongs to the polypores. Unlike a button mushroom or chanterelle, the spores are not on gills, but in fine tubes on the underside of the cap. The German name glossy lacquered polypore describes the second characteristic: the cap surface has a resin-like layer that looks varnished and protects the mushroom from drying out.

The cap is kidney-shaped, reddish brown to almost black, and sits to the side on the stem. This growth form results from the mushroom growing on vertical surfaces, on stumps and at the bases of trunks.

A mushroom that breaks down wood

Reishi is a white-rot fungus. This means it breaks down not only the cellulose in wood, but also lignin, that biopolymer that makes wood rigid in the first place. Only a few organisms can do that; for the forest cycle, they are therefore indispensable. What remains is light, fibrous material, hence the name.

In Europe, it grows preferentially on oak stumps. For extracts, it is cultivated on a wood substrate, usually on blocks made of sawdust and bran, which makes harvesting and batch consistency predictable.

Why it never ends up on the plate

Its flesh is corky and woody and distinctly bitter. Responsible for this are triterpenes, a group of compounds that Reishi produces in great variety. Chewing and frying are therefore out of the question, and that is not a matter of preparation, but of texture.

In East Asia, the mushroom has therefore traditionally been boiled down or extracted. Anyone who sees Reishi sold as an edible mushroom should be suspicious.

Why extract and not powder

Mushroom cell walls are made of chitin, the same substance as insect shells. Humans do not have an enzyme to break it down, which is why ground mushroom material passes through much of the digestive tract unchanged and its ingredients remain trapped in the cells.

A hot-water extraction breaks open this cell wall and releases the water-soluble components, above all the polysaccharides. When comparing two products, it is therefore worth looking at three details: extract or powder, the extract ratio, and the polysaccharide content.

Our Reishi capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily with plenty of liquid with a meal. One capsule provides 300 mg Reishi extract powder, two capsules provide 600 mg accordingly. Those who are just starting should begin with one capsule.

Because it simply cannot be eaten. Ganoderma lucidum, the shiny lacquer bracket, has a corky, woody flesh and tastes distinctly bitter. Chewing and frying it are therefore out of the question. In East Asia, it has long been boiled down or extracted for this reason, never served as a mushroom on the plate.

From Japanese; this term has become established in the West. In China, the same mushroom is called Lingzhi and has been a fixed motif in painting, textiles, and architecture for around two thousand years. The German name glossy bracket describes its appearance: the kidney-shaped cap looks lacquered.

300 mg organic reishi extract powder. This makes reishi the single mushroom in our range with the lowest dose: chaga and shiitake are at 500 mg, hericium and cordyceps at 400 mg per capsule. The comparison is worthwhile before judging products based on capsule count alone.

It grows wild on hardwood stumps, in Europe preferably on oak. For extracts, it is cultivated, usually on a wood substrate. Our extract powder comes from controlled organic cultivation, certified according to the EU organic regulation with the inspection body number DE-ÖKO-039, origin: non-EU agriculture.

Yes, several times. Reishi is included in the Organic Vital Fungi Complex with 125 mg per capsule, in the Immune Complex with 300 mg per daily dose, in Meno Vital with 150 mg, and in the Night Rest capsules with 120 mg. Anyone taking several products in parallel should add the amounts together.

Yes. The ingredients list has two items: organic reishi extract powder and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No anti-caking agents, no flow agents, no colorings or fillers. Mushroom extracts may naturally contain traces of sulfites; you can find the full details in the Usage and Important Information tab.

The bottle contains 90 capsules. At one capsule per day, it lasts 90 days; at two capsules, 45 days. It is packaged in amber glass, which blocks the UV portion of light. Store in a cool, dry place.
