B vitamins in activated form with five accompanying ingredients

Vitalplant’s B Complex Aktiv contains all eight B vitamins and goes even further: alpha-lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, choline, vitamin C, and vitamin E complement the formula. Thirteen ingredients in one daily capsule.

What activated means

Some vitamins must first be converted in the body before they can be used. Activated forms already include this step.

Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin. 25 µg per capsule, 1,000 percent of the nutrient reference value. Methylcobalamin is one of the B12 forms found in the body, unlike synthetic cyanocobalamin.

Folate as Quatrefolic®. 400 µg, 200 percent of the nutrient reference value. Quatrefolic® is 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, the form in which folate circulates in the blood.

The five accompanying ingredients. 200 mg alpha-lipoic acid, 30 mg coenzyme Q10, 25.5 mg choline from phosphatidylcholine, 75 mg vitamin C, and 6 mg vitamin E. They are the reason the Aktiv Complex is more broadly formulated than a pure B complex.

The difference from our B Complex Forte: there the focus is on the eight B vitamins alone, with higher amounts of folate and biotin. The Aktiv Complex, on the other hand, includes the accompanying ingredients.

What the nutrients do

Thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin, and vitamin C contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and vitamin C contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Vitamin B6, biotin, vitamin B12, and vitamin C contribute to normal psychological function. Choline contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism. Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative stress. All of the stated claims are listed in the EU Register of authorized health claims.

B Complex Aktiv capsules: composition and quality

Buckwheat wholegrain flour is used as the carrier. Despite its name, buckwheat is not a grain, but a knotweed plant and therefore naturally gluten-free. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorings. The product is vegan, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Why the numbering has gaps

The eight B vitamins are called B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, and B12. Anyone who counts along will quickly notice that several numbers are missing.

The reason lies in the history of science. At the beginning of the 20th century, the original vitamin B was thought to be a single substance, and only gradually did it become clear that several different compounds were hiding behind it. Each new candidate was given a number. Later, some of them turned out to be substances already known under a new name, while others were not essential for humans. Their numbers were not reassigned, and so the gaps remained.

What activated forms are at their core

Almost all B vitamins are not end products, but precursors of coenzymes, that is, helper molecules enzymes need in order to work. Thiamine becomes thiamine pyrophosphate, riboflavin becomes FAD and FMN, niacin becomes NAD, vitamin B6 becomes pyridoxal-5-phosphate, and pantothenic acid becomes coenzyme A, which already carries the connection in its name.

This conversion is normally carried out by the body. Activated forms already include one or more of these steps. For vitamin B12, this means methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin; for folate, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate instead of folic acid.

Folate and folic acid are not the same

Folate is the collective term for an entire family of related compounds found in leafy vegetables, legumes, and liver; the Latin folium for leaf is part of the name. Folic acid, by contrast, is a single, fully oxidized compound that hardly occurs in nature and is synthetically produced for fortification and tablets.

5-Methyltetrahydrofolate is the form in which folate circulates in the blood. On the label, the term folate is used in all cases, because nutrition labeling converts the different forms to a common reference value.

Why the urine then turns bright yellow

This is the most common follow-up question about B-complex supplements, and the answer is harmless. Riboflavin, or vitamin B2, is a strong yellow pigment; as a food coloring, it carries the number E 101.

B vitamins are water-soluble and are not stored to any significant extent. What the body does not need leaves through the kidneys, and the pigment colors it visibly along the way. The effect usually appears a few hours after taking it and says nothing about the quality of the supplement, only that it contains riboflavin.

Frequently Asked Questions

One capsule daily, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. That is all it takes—the entire formula is packed into this one capsule. Many people take it in the morning because B vitamins help with energy metabolism, and that makes the timing easy to remember.

It refers to the forms used. Vitamin B12 is present as methylcobalamin, meaning in a form that works directly in metabolism, and not as cyanocobalamin, which the body has to convert first. For folate, Quatrefolic is used, a 5-methyltetrahydrofolate that is also already in the active form.

Forte focuses on eight B vitamins and doses some of them higher, such as 900 µg folate compared with 400 µg and 400 µg biotin compared with 200 µg. Aktiv, on the other hand, relies on the active forms and adds five more ingredients: alpha-lipoic acid, choline, coenzyme Q10, vitamin C, and vitamin E. In short: Forte for a higher amount of B vitamins, Aktiv for the broader formula.

Per capsule: 30 mg vitamin B1, 30 mg vitamin B2, 30 mg niacin, 32.7 mg pantothenic acid, 15 mg vitamin B6, 400 µg folate, 200 µg biotin, and 25 µg vitamin B12. In addition, it contains 75 mg vitamin C, 6 mg vitamin E, 200 mg alpha-lipoic acid, 30 mg coenzyme Q10, and 25.5 mg choline from phosphatidylcholine.

The amounts are significantly above the threshold of 15 percent of the nutrient reference value, above which such claims may be used. Permitted claims include the following: Vitamin B12, folate, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and vitamin C help reduce tiredness and fatigue. Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and biotin contribute to the normal function of the nervous system. Pantothenic acid contributes to normal mental performance.

This comes from riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2. The substance is naturally intensely yellow, which is also why its name comes from the Latin flavus for yellow. B vitamins are water-soluble; excess amounts are excreted through the kidneys and can turn the urine a bright yellow. This is a normal process and no cause for concern.

They are the accompanying substances that distinguish Aktiv from the classic B-complex. Alpha-lipoic acid is the largest single component by amount at 200 mg, and it is a sulfur-containing compound that is soluble in both water and fat. Coenzyme Q10 is present as ubiquinone. The choline comes from phosphatidylcholine, i.e. from lecithin. There are no approved claims for these three, which is why we list the amounts.

The bottle contains 90 capsules and, at one capsule a day, lasts exactly 90 days, or a quarter of a year. The carrier ingredient is whole-grain buckwheat flour, which is naturally gluten-free. It is packaged in amber glass because several B vitamins, especially riboflavin and folate, are sensitive to light.
