A mushroom with spines instead of gills

Bio Hericium Capsules from Vitalplant contain extract from Hericium erinaceus. Anyone who has seen the mushroom once won’t forget it: it looks like a white waterfall.

Lion’s mane, hedgehog mushroom, monkey head mushroom

Most mushrooms form their spores on gills or in tubes on the underside of the cap. Hericium does it differently. It does not form a cap, but rather a white clump from which hundreds of soft spines hang down, up to five centimeters long.

Hence the German names hedgehog mushroom and monkey head mushroom. Lion’s mane comes from English, Lion's Mane.

It grows on weakened or dead deciduous trees, in Europe mainly on beech and oak. In Germany, it has become so rare in the wild that it is under nature protection and may not be collected. As an edible mushroom, it is therefore cultivated; its flesh is reminiscent in texture of crab meat.

Why there is no efficacy claim here

Many claims circulate about Hericium. None of them is approved in the EU as a health claim; there simply are none for mushroom extracts.

That is why we do not write anything about an effect, not even indirectly. The mushroom, the amount of extract, and the organic origin are stated on this page, and that is all.

Origin and processing

The extract powder comes from certified organic cultivation, inspection body number DE-ÖKO-039, origin non-EU agriculture. In addition to the extract, the capsule contains only its own shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, so no anti-caking agent and no filler.

It is filled into amber glass, which largely blocks the UV portion of the light.

Hericium is also included in the Organic Medicinal Mushroom Complex, though there it comes in a much smaller daily amount because it shares space with three other mushrooms.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Recommended intake: Take 2 capsules daily with sufficient liquid with a meal.

Allergens: According to the raw material specification, no allergens requiring labeling in accordance with Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 are contained. However, mushroom extracts may naturally contain traces of sulfites.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

Spines Instead of Gills

Most mushrooms produce their spores on gills or in tubes on the underside of the cap. Hericium erinaceus takes a third route: it does not form a cap at all, but instead a white mass from which hundreds of soft spines hang, up to five centimeters long. The spores sit on their surface.

Hence the German names hedgehog mushroom and monkey head mushroom. The name lion's mane comes from English and became established through trade. Botanically, it belongs to the family of tooth fungi.

Why it is protected in Germany

In the wild, Hericium grows on wounds of weakened or dead deciduous trees, in Europe especially on beech and oak. It needs old trees with injuries, which have become rare in managed forests.

Accordingly, the mushroom is rare. In Germany, it is on the Red List and is specially protected; it may not be collected. For food and extracts, it is therefore cultivated exclusively, mostly on substrate blocks made from sawdust and bran. This works relatively well with this species, which is why Hericium is now also available in trade as an edible mushroom.

A mushroom with an unusual texture

As an edible mushroom, Hericium stands out. Its flesh is fibrous and tender at the same time; in texture and taste it is reminiscent of crab or lobster meat. In the kitchen, it is therefore often pan-fried and used as a seafood substitute.

For the extract, that does not matter: what counts there is not the texture, but what can be drawn out of the dried mushroom.

Why extract and not powder

Mushroom cell walls consist of chitin, the same substance as insect shells. Humans do not have an enzyme to break it down. Ground mushroom material therefore passes through the digestive tract largely unchanged; the nutrients remain trapped inside the cells.

A hot-water extraction breaks open the cell wall and dissolves out the water-soluble components, especially the polysaccharides. That is the difference between an extract and a simply ground powder, even if both can carry the same milligram amount.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take 2 capsules daily with enough liquid during a meal. This corresponds to 800 mg of Hericium extract powder per day. You can take both at once or split them across two meals.

Because it does not form a cap with gills like most mushrooms. Hericium erinaceus grows as a white clump, from which hundreds of soft spines up to five centimeters long hang down. The spores sit on these spines. Hence the German names Igelstachelbart and Affenkopfpilz; Lion's mane comes from English.

Not in Germany. The lion's mane mushroom has become so rare in the wild that it is protected and may not be collected. It grows on weakened or dead deciduous trees, especially beech and oak. For food and extracts, it is therefore cultivated.

400 mg organic Hericium extract powder per capsule. For comparison within our range: Chaga and Shiitake are at 500 mg per capsule, Reishi at 300 mg, Cordyceps also at 400 mg. In the Organic Medicinal Mushroom Complex, Hericium is included at 125 mg per capsule.

As an edible mushroom, yes, and notably so: its flesh is reminiscent in texture and flavor of crab or lobster meat, which is why it is valued in the kitchen. In capsule form, that makes no difference, as the shell bypasses the taste. When opening the can, one notices a slightly mushroomy smell.

Yes, from certified organic cultivation, certified according to the EU Organic Regulation with the inspection body number DE-ÖKO-039. The origin is listed as non-EU agriculture. The capsule contains only the extract and the vegan shell made of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose.

There are three things to note: the amount in milligrams, whether it is an extract or plain powder, and whether an extract ratio is specified. Powder and extract with the same milligram amount are two completely different things. In our case, extract is listed on the ingredients list, and the amount is specified as 400 mg per capsule.

The bottle contains 90 capsules and lasts 45 days at two capsules per day. It is packaged in amber glass, which blocks the UV component of light. Mushroom extracts may naturally contain traces of sulfites; you can find full details in the Usage and Important Information tab.
