Four extracts, all four standardized

Vitalplant's milk thistle complex combines four plant extracts. What makes it unusual: each one is standardized to a marker compound, not just the one in the name.

The four extracts and their marker compounds

Milk thistle extract, 250 mg, with 80 percent silymarin. Silymarin is a mixture of flavonolignans, especially silybin, silychristin, and silydianin. It is obtained from the ripe seeds of Silybum marianum.

Schisandra extract, 200 mg, with 5 percent schisandrin. Schisandra chinensis is a climbing plant from East Asia. Its berries are called wu wei zi in Chinese, fruit of the five flavors, because they taste sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent all at once.

Artichoke extract, 150 mg, with 10 percent cynarin. The leaves are used, not the edible bud. Cynarin is a derivative of caffeic acid and one of the characteristic bitter compounds.

Dandelion root extract, 50 mg, with 2 percent flavonoids. Unlike the Bitter Complex, which uses the whole herb, this product uses only the root.

Why standardization matters here

The content of secondary plant compounds varies significantly depending on the variety, location, harvest time, and weather conditions. A standardized extract balances out these fluctuations, so each batch falls within the same range.

There are no authorized health claims for the four plant extracts. That is why we state the amount, plant part, and marker compound. The milk thistle complex complements a varied and balanced diet.

Milk thistle complex capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of five components: the four extracts and the capsule shell made from hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorings. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Schisandra, a climbing plant from the Amur region

Schisandra chinensis is a woody twining plant that grows on trees up to several meters high in northern China, Korea, and the Russian Far East. The plant is dioecious, so male and female flowers grow on different specimens, which makes cultivation more demanding.

The red berries hang in grape-like clusters. The name “fruit of five flavors” is not poetic: the sour pulp comes from organic acids, the bitter and pungent note from the seeds, which also contain lignans such as schisandrin. Whether an extract is made from the whole berry or from the seed therefore makes a difference.

Dandelion root and the autumn harvest time

The root is dug in autumn, and there is a reason for that. Over the summer, the plant stores inulin, a reserve substance made from fructose building blocks, and in autumn this supply is at its highest. In spring, it breaks it down again to push out leaves and flowers.

Roasted dandelion root was a common coffee substitute in times of need, similar to chicory root. The white milky sap that escapes when it is cut, by the way, is the same secretion that leaves brown stains on children's fingers.

Four key substances from four classes of compounds

The four extracts are not only botanically different, but also chemically. Silymarin consists of flavonolignans, schisandrin is a pure lignan, cynarin is a derivative of caffeic acid, and dandelion is classified under the flavonoids.

Each of these classes requires its own analysis method with its own reference substance. Four standardized extracts in one formula therefore mean four separate tests per batch. That is the effort hidden behind the unassuming word standardized.

Why 2 percent is no worse than 80

Placed side by side, the figures look dramatic: 80 percent silymarin versus 2 percent flavonoids. But that does not mean one extract would be forty times higher quality.

The percentage values refer to completely different classes of compounds with completely different natural abundance. Silymarin occurs naturally in a concentrated form in milk thistle seed and can be purified extensively. Flavonoids in a dandelion root are, from the outset, in the low single-digit percentage range; 2 percent is a common and reliable value there. Standardizations are always comparable only within the same plant and the same key substance.

Our Milk Thistle Complex Capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid, with a meal. If taking two, it is best to spread them across two meals. The instruction to take it with food is expressly stated in the recommended use.

Per capsule: 250 mg milk thistle extract with 80 percent silymarin, 200 mg schisandra berry extract with 5 percent schisandrin, 150 mg artichoke extract with 10 percent cynarin, and 50 mg dandelion root extract with 2 percent flavonoids. All four are listed with quantity and standardization.

Schisandra chinensis is a climbing plant from Northeast Asia whose red berries are called wu wei zi in Chinese, literally five-flavor berry. The name comes from the fact that the berry tastes sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and spicy all at once. The extract is standardized to schisandrin, the characteristic active ingredient.

Our individual milk thistle capsules provide 300 mg of extract per capsule, also with 80 percent silymarin. The complex contains slightly less milk thistle at 250 mg, but is supplemented with three other plants. In short: the single product for concentrated milk thistle, the complex for a combination.

Silymarin is a mixture of several flavonolignans and the characteristic active ingredient in milk thistle seeds. 80 percent means that 250 mg of extract contains 200 mg of silymarin. For milk thistle products, this is the value to compare, not the amount of extract alone.

Yes, in two different ways. We also carry both milk thistle and artichoke as individual products, and the bitter complex also contains artichoke and dandelion. Anyone taking several of these in parallel should add up the amounts of the plants rather than looking at each can separately. Schisandra is not found in any other product.

Yes. The capsule contains the four plant extracts and the shell is made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a plant-based cellulose derivative. No anti-caking agents, no flow agents, no colorants or fillers.

The jar contains 120 capsules. At one capsule a day, it lasts 120 days; at two capsules a day, 60 days. It is bottled in amber glass, which blocks the UV portion of light. Store in a cool, dry place.
