Vitalplant Men Capsules rely on two amino acids in a high dosage, supplemented with pine bark extract and two trace elements. The daily dose consists of two capsules twice daily.

The two amino acids

L-citrulline, 2,000 mg. A non-proteinogenic amino acid, meaning it is not incorporated into proteins. It owes its name to watermelon, botanically Citrullus lanatus, from which it was first isolated.

L-arginine, 1,600 mg. A semi-essential amino acid. The body can produce it itself, but under certain conditions not in sufficient amounts. Citrulline and arginine are directly connected in metabolism.

200 mg pine bark extract from the bark of the maritime pine, Pinus pinaster. Plus 3.6 mg zinc and 36 µg selenium.

What zinc and selenium do

Zinc contributes to normal fertility and normal reproduction. Selenium contributes to normal sperm formation.

Both also help protect cells from oxidative stress. All statements listed are included in the EU Register of authorized health claims.

Men's Capsules: composition and quality

Amino acids in this amount cannot be encapsulated without processing aids. The formula therefore contains natural magnesium stearate as a release agent and silicon dioxide as an anti-caking agent. Both are approved additives and are listed in the ingredients. No colorants, no flavors. The product is vegan, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Twenty amino acids, and citrulline is not one of them

Proteins are built from twenty amino acids. Arginine is one of them; citrulline is not. Such amino acids are called non-proteinogenic: they occur in metabolism, but are never incorporated into a protein chain.

Citrulline was first isolated in Japan in 1914 from watermelon juice. In the fruit, it is found mainly in the white layer just beneath the rind, the part most people cut away. Chemically, it differs from arginine in only one place on the side chain, and both arise directly from the urea cycle.

How amino acids are made

Both amino acids come from fermentation. Bacteria grow in large tanks on sugar from molasses or starch and release the product into the nutrient solution, from which it crystallizes out.

The L in the name is a real specification. Amino acids exist in two mirror-image forms, and only the L-form occurs in living cells. Fermentation produces only this form, whereas chemical synthesis produces a mixture of both.

Bark from Europe's largest forest

The maritime pine, Pinus pinaster, grows in southwestern France across a little over one million hectares. This forest is not a natural landscape, but was reforested starting in the 19th century to stabilize shifting dunes and drain swampy ground.

The bark is a byproduct of sawmills and would otherwise be waste wood. Its extracts are standardized to procyanidins, the same group of compounds known from grape seeds as OPC. Bark and seed provide different profiles, which is why the two raw materials are not interchangeable.

Why processing aids are listed here

Four capsules with 3.6 grams of amino acids are a technical challenge. Amino acid crystals attract moisture, stick together, and cling to the punches of the capsule machine. Without anti-caking and flow agents, capsules end up unevenly filled.

Magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide do exactly that, in amounts of fractions of a percent. We mention them because they are listed. What is more noteworthy is the reverse conclusion: anyone advertising a high-dose amino acid product as free from additives is either selling much less substance per capsule or not listing everything.
