Named after a caterpillar, delivered as an extract

Cordyceps capsules from Vitalplant contain extract from Cordyceps sinensis, known in German as caterpillar fungus. The name is unusual enough to deserve an explanation.

Where the name comes from

Cordyceps sinensis grows wild on the Tibetan plateau, at altitudes between 3,000 and 5,000 meters. There, the fungus infects the larvae of root borers, grows through them, and in spring sends a slender, club-shaped stalk up from the ground.

The Tibetan name Yartsa Gunbu describes exactly that: summer grass, winter worm. Wild-collected specimens are among the most expensive natural products of all and are traded by weight.

Taxonomically, the species has been correctly called Ophiocordyceps sinensis since 2007. The older name Cordyceps sinensis has remained in trade and is therefore also listed on our ingredients list.

What we are allowed to say about it — and what we are not

For medicinal mushrooms, not a single health claim is approved in the EU. The relevant applications have been sitting unresolved for years on the so-called on-hold list, neither approved nor rejected.

We could fill this limbo with hints. We do not. What appears on this page is the species, origin, and extract amount, and that can be verified.

Positioning in the range and quality

Cordyceps is the only one of our medicinal mushrooms without organic certification. It is also the only one not included in the Organic Medicinal Mushroom Complex. If you want it, you need these capsules.

The extract sits in a vegan capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, without anti-caking agents and without filler. It is filled in amber glass because brown glass largely blocks the UV portion of light.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Caterpillar fungus extract (Cordyceps Sinensis), veg. capsule shell: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Recommended use: Take 1–2 capsules daily, without chewing, with sufficient liquid at mealtime.

Important information: Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and lifestyle. The stated recommended daily intake must not be exceeded. Keep out of reach of small children.

Allergens: According to the raw material specification, it contains no allergens requiring declaration in accordance with Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011. However, mushroom extracts may naturally contain traces of sulfites.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

The only one that does not decompose wood

Reishi, Hericium, Chaga, and Shiitake all live on wood. Cordyceps is the exception: it is an entomopathogenic fungus, meaning it infects insects. On the Tibetan plateau, at elevations between 3,000 and 5,000 meters, it grows in the larvae of root borers, spreads through them with its mycelium, and sends up a slender, club-shaped stalk from the ground in spring.

The Tibetan term Yartsa Gunbu describes exactly this observation: summer grass, winter worm. From a distance, the structure looks like a blade of grass; dug up, like a caterpillar with a stem.

One name, two genera

Taxonomically, the species has been called Ophiocordyceps sinensis since 2007. Genetic studies had shown that the former catch-all genus Cordyceps contained several distantly related groups, which is why it was split up. The older name Cordyceps sinensis has remained in trade and therefore also appears on our ingredients list.

When comparing Cordyceps products, pay attention to the species. In addition to Ophiocordyceps sinensis, Cordyceps militaris is often offered, a separate species that readily forms fruiting bodies on substrate and is therefore cultivated on a large scale. Both are commonly called Cordyceps.

Why wild harvest does not meet demand

Wild-harvested goods are traded by weight and are among the most expensive natural products in the world. In parts of Tibet and Nepal, collecting them is a major part of entire villages' annual income, putting corresponding pressure on stocks.

For dietary supplements in any significant quantity, wild harvesting is therefore not an option, neither in terms of price nor volume. The industry's raw materials come from controlled production, usually from fermentation.

Why extract and not powder

The chitin rule also applies here: mushroom cell walls are made of a substance that humans cannot break down. Without extraction, the active compounds remain trapped in the cells. A hot-water extraction breaks open the wall and releases the water-soluble components. When comparing products, three details are therefore crucial: extract or powder, the extract ratio, and the species.

Our Cordyceps capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily, unchewed, with enough liquid, with a meal. One capsule provides 400 mg of extract, two capsules correspondingly 800 mg. Those who are starting for the first time should begin with one capsule.

Because the wild mushroom on the Tibetan plateau infects the larvae of root borers, grows through them, and in spring sends a slender, club-shaped stalk out of the ground. The Tibetan name Yartsa Gunbu describes exactly that: summer grass, winter worm. Wild-harvested specimens are among the most expensive natural products of all.

Nein.

Both refer to the same species. Its taxonomically correct name has been Ophiocordyceps sinensis since 2007, after genetic studies made a reclassification of the genus necessary. The older name Cordyceps sinensis has remained in commercial use and is therefore also listed on our ingredients list.

We do not have organic certification for this raw material, which is why we do not label it as organic. Our other medicinal mushrooms, namely Reishi, Hericium, Chaga and Shiitake, carry the certification body number DE-ÖKO-039. Cordyceps is also the only one not included in the Organic Medicinal Mushroom Complex.

400 mg caterpillar fungus extract. For comparison within our range: Chaga and Shiitake are at 500 mg per capsule, Hericium also at 400 mg, Reishi at 300 mg. In the Organic Medicinal Mushrooms Complex, it is 125 mg per mushroom and capsule.

Yes. Biologically, mushrooms are neither plants nor animals, but a kingdom of their own; a mushroom extract is considered non-animal. The capsule shell is made of plant-based hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No separating agents, no anti-caking agents, no colorants.

The bottle contains 90 capsules. At one capsule per day, it lasts 90 days; at two capsules, 45 days. Packed in amber glass, store in a cool, dry place. Mushroom extracts may naturally contain traces of sulfites; you can find the full details in the Usage and Important Information tab.
