Organic Ceylon cinnamon, not cassia

Most cinnamon sold on the market is cassia. Ceylon cinnamon is a different type, more labor-intensive to produce and significantly more expensive. Vitalplant’s organic cinnamon capsules contain only Ceylon cinnamon from controlled organic cultivation.

The difference between Ceylon and cassia

Both come from trees of the Cinnamomum genus, but they are different species. Ceylon cinnamon comes from Cinnamomum verum, while cassia comes mainly from Cinnamomum cassia.

Visible in the stick. Ceylon cinnamon sticks consist of many thin layers of bark rolled together and can be crumbled. Cassia sticks are a single thick layer of bark rolled tightly into a hard stick.

The coumarin content. Coumarin is a natural flavoring substance that occurs in cassia cinnamon at a much higher concentration than in Ceylon cinnamon. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has defined a tolerable daily intake for this. Ceylon cinnamon has a many times lower coumarin content.

500 mg of Ceylon cinnamon powder per capsule. Ground bark, not concentrated, with no additional ingredients.

Cinnamomum verum: tree and harvest

The Ceylon cinnamon tree comes from Sri Lanka and South India. It is not the wood that is harvested, but the inner bark of young shoots. It is peeled by hand, and as it dries, the characteristic curls form.

The raw material for our capsules is certified in accordance with the EU organic regulation, inspection body number DE-ÖKO-039, origin non-EU agriculture.

Organic cinnamon capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of two ingredients: organic Ceylon cinnamon powder and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorings. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

A laurel plant, not a spice bush

Cinnamomum verum belongs to the laurel family and is therefore related to bay laurel, camphor tree, and avocado. It is an evergreen tree native to Sri Lanka and South India. Sri Lanka was called Ceylon until 1972, hence the trade name.

What is used is not the wood, but the inner bark of young shoots. For harvesting, the trees are regularly cut back hard, so they sprout again from the rootstock. What is sold in trade as a cinnamon stick is dried and rolled bark.

Ceylon and cassia are two species

What is sold as cinnamon in Europe usually does not come from Cinnamomum verum, but from related East Asian species grouped under the collective term cassia. They are cheaper to cultivate and make up by far the largest share of world trade.

A well-known difference between the two lies in the coumarin content: it is significantly lower in Ceylon cinnamon than in cassia. The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment has dealt with this several times, which is why the distinction is now also known outside specialist circles.

How to tell the species apart

With sticks, the distinction is clear. Ceylon cinnamon consists of many thin layers of bark rolled into one another from both sides; in cross section, it looks like a cigar. The stick can be crumbled with your fingers.

Cassia cinnamon, by contrast, forms a single, clearly thicker layer of bark that curls inward from both edges, creating a double spiral. It is hard and can hardly be broken. This feature does not help with ground powder; there, only the species name on the package remains.

Harvesting and processing

It is preferably peeled during the rainy season, because then the bark comes away from the wood most easily. The outer cork layer is scraped off, the remaining inner bark is cut into strips and laid out to dry, where it rolls up on its own. The rolls are then nested together and dried further.

Our capsules contain ground bark powder, not extract. There is therefore no extract ratio here: 500 mg of powder is 500 mg of bark.

Our Cinnamon Capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take 2 capsules daily with enough liquid during a meal. This corresponds to 1,000 mg of organic Ceylon cinnamon powder per day. You can take both together or split them between two meals.

There are two different types. Ceylon cinnamon comes from Cinnamomum verum and is therefore also called true cinnamon, while cassia cinnamon comes from related species in East Asia. A well-known difference lies in the coumarin content: it is significantly lower in Ceylon cinnamon than in cassia. By far the largest share of cinnamon sold commercially is cassia, because it is cheaper.

Best on the stick: Ceylon cinnamon consists of many thin, rolled-up layers of bark and looks like a cigar in cross-section. Cassia cinnamon, by contrast, forms a single thick layer of bark that curls inward from both sides. With ground cinnamon, that doesn't help; the species label on the package is what matters.

Pure ground cinnamon powder, no extract: 500 mg per capsule. There is therefore no extract ratio here. The inner bark of the tree is used, which is hand-rolled and dried after peeling.

The crucial point is the type. Cinnamon from the supermarket is usually cassia, and the package often does not say which type is included. Here, Ceylon cinnamon is explicitly listed in the ingredients, and the amount per capsule is specified. As a spice, cinnamon is still a good thing, just without this information.

From controlled organic cultivation, certified in accordance with the EU Organic Regulation with the control body number DE-ÖKO-039 and the origin designation Non-EU agriculture. Cinnamomum verum originally comes from Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, which is what the trade name refers to.

Yes. The ingredients list has two items: organic Ceylon cinnamon powder and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No anti-caking agents, no flow agents, no colorings or fillers.

The jar contains 90 capsules and lasts 45 days at two capsules per day. Bottled in amber glass, store in a cool, dry place. This protects the essential oils that give cinnamon its fragrance and gradually dissipate over time.
