No fruiting body, but a crust on the birch

Organic Chaga capsules from Vitalplant contain extract from Inonotus obliquus. What is harvested from Chaga is botanically something different from every other mushroom in our range.

How Chaga grows

The fungus Inonotus obliquus infects living birches, especially in cold regions: Siberia, Scandinavia, Canada, Northeastern Europe. At the site of infection, over the years a black, cracked mass forms that looks like charred wood.

This mass is not a fruiting body, but a sclerotium, a sterile, persistent structure made of compacted fungal mycelium. The actual fruiting body only develops when the tree dies, and is hardly ever found.

On the outside, the sclerotium is deep black, due to a high melanin content. If you break it open, a rust-orange interior appears. Because the fungus draws its material from the living birch for years, it also contains components of the tree itself.

Why no effects are described here

Chaga is traditionally used as an infusion in Northern Europe and Russia, and many stories have grown up around it accordingly.

In the EU, no health claims are approved for mushroom extracts. So we do not make any, neither directly nor by implication. We describe the mushroom, not its supposed performance.

Origin and processing

The extract powder comes from certified organic cultivation, inspection body number DE-ÖKO-039, origin non-EU agriculture. In addition to the extract, the capsule contains only its vegan shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.

With 500 mg per capsule and one capsule a day, Chaga is the easiest product in our mushroom range to dose. Amber glass largely blocks the UV portion of light.

Chaga is also included in the Organic Medicinal Mushroom Complex, there with 125 mg per capsule alongside Reishi, Hericium and Shiitake.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Apotheke.

Mushrooms Are Their Own Kingdom

Biologically, mushrooms belong neither to plants nor to animals, but form their own kingdom. They do not perform photosynthesis and, like animals, feed on organic matter. Their cell walls are not made of cellulose like those of plants, but of chitin, the same substance that insect shells are made of. This cell wall is the reason extracts even exist for medicinal mushrooms, more on that below.

Sclerotium, fruiting body, mycelium

The vast majority of a mushroom is invisible: the mycelium, a network of fine threads in wood or soil. What we call and collect as a mushroom is usually just the fruiting body, the short-lived reproductive organ.

With chaga, it is neither. What is harvested is a sclerotium: a sterile, long-lasting structure made of highly compacted mycelium that the fungus builds up at the site of infection over years. It does not produce spores. The actual fruiting body only forms once the tree dies, grows beneath the bark, and is rarely found. So anyone asking whether the medicinal mushroom is processed as fruiting body or mycelium gets a third answer with chaga.

Why chaga grows on birch

Inonotus obliquus infects almost exclusively living birches, occasionally alders too, and does so in cold regions: Siberia, Scandinavia, Canada, northeastern Europe. It usually takes ten to twenty years from the first infection to a harvestable mass.

The outside is deep black and cracked, due to its high melanin content, the same pigment that also colors human skin. If the mass is broken open, a rust-orange interior appears. Because the fungus draws its material from the living tree over years, it also contains components of the birch itself, such as betulin from the bark.

Why extract and not powder

This is where the chitin cell wall comes in. Humans do not have an enzyme to break down chitin; ground mushroom material therefore passes through the digestive tract largely unchanged. The active compounds remain trapped inside the cells.

A hot-water extraction breaks open this cell wall and releases the water-soluble components, above all the polysaccharides. That is exactly what distinguishes an extract from a simply ground mushroom powder, even if both can have the same milligram amount on the package. When comparing products, it is therefore worth looking at three details: extract or powder, the extraction ratio, and the polysaccharide content.

Our organic Chaga capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

One capsule daily with plenty of liquid, taken with a meal. With 500 mg extract per capsule and just one capsule a day, Chaga is the easiest product to dose in our mushroom range.

Inonotus obliquus, the crooked polypore. It infects living birches, especially in cold regions such as Siberia, Scandinavia, Canada, and Northeastern Europe. What is harvested is botanically not a fruiting body, but a sclerotium: a sterile perennial structure made of compacted fungal mycelium that grows at the site of infection over the years.

Because of the high melanin content of the outer layer, the same pigment that also colors human skin and hair. The mass is jet black and cracked. If you break it open, a rust-orange interior is revealed. Because the fungus draws its material from the living birch tree over the course of years, it also contains components of the tree.

Chaga is much more difficult to cultivate than shiitake or hericium because it needs a living birch trunk and takes years to grow. Our extract powder carries organic certification with the control body number DE-ÖKO-039 and the origin designation Non-EU agriculture. If you have questions about the exact extraction method, our customer service team will be happy to help.

500 mg organic Chaga extract powder. For comparison within our range: Shiitake is also 500 mg, Hericium and Cordyceps are 400 mg, and Reishi is 300 mg per capsule. In the Organic Medicinal Mushrooms Complex, there are 125 mg of Chaga per capsule.

In Northern Europe and Russia, chaga is traditionally prepared as an infusion, with the hard pieces simmered for a long time. That takes effort, and the amount is always a matter of estimation. Capsules deliver exactly 500 mg every time and completely avoid the bitter, earthy taste.

Yes. The ingredients list has two items: organic Chaga extract powder and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No separating agents, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. Mushroom extracts may naturally contain traces of sulfites; you can find the full details in the Application and Important Notes tab.

The jar contains 90 capsules and, at one capsule a day, lasts exactly 90 days, or one quarter of a year. That makes Chaga our medicinal mushroom with the longest duration per jar. Packed in amber glass; store in a cool, dry place.
