12 mg of iron from curry leaf extract

Most iron supplements work with mineral iron salts. Vitalplant's Iron Vegan Capsules take a different approach: the iron comes entirely from a plant extract.

Iron from the plant instead of the salt

400 mg curry leaf extract per capsule, standardized to 3 percent iron. This provides 12 mg of iron, which corresponds to 86 percent of the nutrient reference value.

The iron is present in a plant matrix. It was not added as an isolated salt, but comes from the plant itself, where it is naturally bound.

Curry leaf is not curry. Murraya koenigii is a tree from the rue family, botanically related to citrus fruits. The aromatic leaves are cooked fresh in South Indian cuisine. It has nothing to do with curry powder, a spice blend.

What iron does

Iron contributes to normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin and to normal oxygen transport in the body. It also contributes to normal cognitive function, normal energy metabolism, and normal function of the immune system.

Iron also plays a role in cell division. All of the stated claims are listed in the EU Register of authorized health claims.

Iron Vegan Capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of two ingredients: curry leaf extract and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants, no sugar. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at the Stern Apotheke.

The curry leaf tree

Murraya koenigii is a small tree that grows a few meters tall, with pinnate leaves: up to twenty small leaflets grow along a central rachis. In India it is called Kadi Patta, and in many South Indian dishes the leaves are briefly sizzled in hot fat at the start.

Its aroma is fleeting and almost completely disappears when dried, which is why fresh leaves are hard to find in Europe and dried ones are of little use. As a houseplant, however, the tree is fairly easy to keep.

What standardization to a mineral means

How much iron a plant contains depends on the soil it grows in, and therefore varies from harvest to harvest. An extract that is supposed to contain 3 percent iron does not come about by itself: each batch is analyzed and adjusted to the specified content.

What matters here is the classification: 400 mg of an extract standardized to 3 percent is something different from 400 mg of dried curry leaves from the spice shelf. The extract is a concentrated extract, not a ground leaf, and only that is why a single capsule contains 12 mg.

Iron in the plant kingdom

The main plant sources of iron are legumes, millet, amaranth, and quinoa, pumpkin seeds, sesame, nuts, and dark green vegetables. Whole grains also count, but they come with phytic acid as a counteracting factor.

Spinach owes its reputation to a mix-up passed down over decades. Its content is in the same range as other green leafy vegetables and by no means ten times higher. Pumpkin seeds and lentils do much better.

Why 86 percent and not around 100

12 mg of iron corresponds to 86 percent of the nutrient reference value of 14 mg. There is a reason for the odd number: it comes from the extract, not from a target value. We do not add iron salt to reach a neat percentage.

For labeling, the magnitude is what matters anyway: from 15 percent of the reference value per serving, a food may be described as a source of a nutrient; from 30 percent, as high in it. Both are clearly exceeded here.

Our Iron Vegan Capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Take one capsule daily, about one hour before a meal, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. The time interval before eating is included in the recommendation for a reason; more on that in the next question.

Because a number of food components bind iron in the intestine. These include phytates from whole grains and legumes, calcium from dairy products, and above all the tannins in coffee and black tea. Leaving some time between them avoids this. If you do not tolerate the capsule on an empty stomach, take it with a light meal without dairy products.

An extract from the leaves of Murraya koenigii, a tree from South Asia. Botanically, it belongs to the rue family and is therefore related to citrus fruits. Important distinction: curry leaves have nothing to do with curry powder, which is a spice blend. The extract is standardized to 3 percent iron.

400 mg Curryblatt-Extrakt mit einem Eisenanteil von 3 Prozent, daraus ergeben sich 12 mg Eisen. Das entspricht rund 86 Prozent der Nährstoffbezugsmenge von 14 mg.

The key difference lies in the source. This product gets its iron from a plant extract and is vegan. Our iron glycinate capsules use iron bisglycinate and also contain acerola and lactoferrin, which is derived from milk; they are therefore neither vegan nor suitable for people with a milk protein allergy.

Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, to normal oxygen transport in the body, to normal cognitive function, to normal energy metabolism, to the normal function of the immune system, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It also has a role in cell division.

Better not at the same time. The polyphenols in coffee, black tea, and green tea form poorly soluble compounds with iron and are the most effective of all inhibitors. A gap of around one hour either way is usually enough. Water or a glass of orange juice, on the other hand, is unproblematic, because vitamin C increases iron absorption.

The bottle contains 90 capsules and, at one capsule per day, lasts exactly 90 days. The ingredients list has two items: curry leaf extract and the vegan capsule shell. Iron supplements should always be kept particularly safely out of the reach of children.
