Black Maca as a 10:1 Root Extract

Maca comes in several color types, which differ significantly in how common they are. Vitalplant's Black Maca capsules contain a concentrated 10:1 extract from the black variety.

What a 10:1 Extract Means

For one part extract, ten parts of dried maca root are used. A capsule with 450 mg of extract therefore corresponds mathematically to around 4,500 mg of root material. This is the difference from pure maca powder, which is not concentrated.

Why black maca is rarer. Most of the harvest consists of yellow tubers. Red and black types make up only a smaller share. They are sorted by hand after harvest, which explains the higher price.

The color is in the skin. Yellow, red, and black describe the color of the tuber surface. It is the same species, not different plants.

Lepidium meyenii: Cultivation in the Andes

Maca belongs to the mustard family and is therefore related to radish and cress. The plant is grown in the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes, often above 4,000 meters.

There, there are strong temperature fluctuations, intense sunlight, and thin air. After harvesting, the tubers are traditionally dried in the sun, which takes several weeks. Only then does the extraction follow.

Black Maca Capsules: Composition and Quality

The formula consists of two components: the maca root extract and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no flow agents, no colorants. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Maca is related to mustard and radish

As a cruciferous plant, Lepidium meyenii belongs to the same family as mustard, radish, cress, cabbage, and rapeseed. This family is characterized by glucosinolates, the compounds from which the pungent mustard oils are formed when the tissue is damaged.

Maca produces them as well, which explains the mild radish-like sharpness of the fresh tuber. In addition, the plant contains a group of compounds found nowhere else: macamides, chemically fatty acid amides. They are therefore considered the specific marker for maca and are used to verify authenticity in extracts.

Drying is part of the preparation

In the Andes, maca is never eaten fresh. After harvest, the tubers are left outdoors for several weeks, where they are exposed to intense sun during the day and frost at night. This change removes moisture and also alters the taste and composition.

Only the dried tuber is then cooked, ground, or extracted. Traditional preparation therefore includes a processing step that can easily be mistaken for mere preservation. For the extract, the dried root is the starting point, and the 10:1 ratio refers to this as well.

What an extract ratio leaves unsaid

10:1 says how much starting material was used, but not what ends up in the extract. That is determined by the solvent: an aqueous extract contains mainly water-soluble components, while an alcoholic one contains more of the fat-soluble ones, including the macamides.

Two extracts with the same ratio can therefore differ in composition. They only become fully comparable with an additional content specification. The ratio alone describes the yield, not the result.

A raw material with a dispute over origin

The classic cultivation area lies on the Junín plateau in central Peru, at over 4,000 meters. The soils there are left fallow for several years after a maca harvest because the tuber leaches them heavily.

Peru has placed the export of seed and plant material under protection after maca was also grown in China in the 2010s. Since then, the raw material market has known both origins, at significantly different prices. A clear indication of origin is therefore one of the more important details on the package when it comes to maca.

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily, swallowed whole with enough liquid with a meal. One capsule provides 450 mg of root extract, two capsules accordingly provide 900 mg. Those who are just starting should begin with one capsule.

From 10 kilograms of dried maca root, 1 kilogram of extract is produced. The 450 mg per capsule therefore corresponds mathematically to 4.5 grams of root. That is exactly the difference compared with maca powder, which contains the whole root unchanged.
