Passionflower Capsules with 10:1 Extract

Passionflower owes its name not to passion, but to Spanish missionaries of the 16th century. Vitalplant Passionflower Capsules contain a concentrated 10:1 extract from Passiflora incarnata.

What a 10:1 Extract Means

The 10:1 ratio describes the concentration: for one part extract, ten parts dried plant material are used. A capsule with 375 mg of extract therefore corresponds mathematically to around 3,750 mg of starting material.

The herb is used. The above-ground parts of the plant are used for the extract, namely the leaves, stems, and tendrils. Naturally, they contain flavonoids, a large group of secondary plant compounds found in many flowers and leaves.

Passiflora incarnata: Plant and Name History

Passionflower is a climbing plant from the southeastern United States. It climbs several meters high and produces one of the most unusual flowers in the plant kingdom: a ring of thread-like appendages above the petals, with five stamens and three stigmas above that.

It was precisely this structure that led to the name. In the 16th century, Spanish missionaries interpreted the ring of threads as the crown of thorns, the three stigmas as nails, and the five stamens as wounds. This interpretation gave rise to the name passionflower, which has remained to this day. Botanically, it has nothing to do with the name.

Passionflower Capsules: Composition and Quality

The formula consists of two ingredients: passionflower extract and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. Where the name comes from

The name has nothing to do with passion, but with the Passion story. In the 16th century, Spanish missionaries in South America interpreted the unusual structure of the flower as a symbol: the thread-like corona as the crown of thorns, the three styles as nails, and the five stamens as wounds.

This interpretation became embedded in the botanical name and has remained to this day, although the plant has long since come to be viewed more soberly. By the way, each individual flower opens for just one day.

One of around five hundred species

The Passiflora genus includes about five hundred species, mostly climbing plants from the tropics and subtropics of the Americas. The best known is Passiflora edulis, whose fruit appears in supermarkets as maracuja.

In these capsules is another one: Passiflora incarnata, known in the English-speaking world as Maypop. It comes from the southeastern USA, is hardy, dies back completely above ground in autumn, and sprouts again from the rootstock in spring. It is not the fruit that is used, but the flowering herb.

What herb means

Herb is a technical term with a clear meaning: the above-ground parts of the plant, namely stems, leaves, tendrils, and flowers, harvested at the time of flowering. The root and fruit are left out.

This definition is not just a formality. Different plant parts of the same species differ greatly in their composition, which is why plant products always involve both: the species and the part used.

What 10:1 means

Our extract carries the ratio 10:1. From ten kilograms of dried herb, one kilogram of extract is produced, because everything insoluble remains behind and only the extracted components are evaporated.

For the capsule, this means: 375 mg of extract corresponds mathematically to 3,750 mg of dried passionflower herb. So if you compare two products, you should never look only at the milligram amount. 500 mg of pure herb powder is something completely different from 500 mg of a 10:1 extract.
