Why three magnesium compounds

Shilajit is neither a plant extract nor a mineral in the classic sense, but something in between. The Shilajit capsules from Vitalplant contain PrimaVie, a standardized, trademarked raw ingredient.

What Shilajit actually is

Shilajit is a resin-like mass that emerges from rock fissures in the high altitudes of the Himalayas. It formed over very long periods from plant material that was transformed under pressure and through alternating frost and heat. That is why Shilajit is found only at certain elevations and only in small quantities.

What is characteristic is its content of fulvic and humic acids. These are organic acids that also occur in humus-rich soils. They give the raw material its dark color and earthy character.

Why a trademarked raw ingredient. Depending on where it is found, raw Shilajit varies considerably in composition and may contain impurities from the rock. Methylsulfonylmethane, 500 mg. MSM is an organic sulfur compound that naturally occurs in small amounts in foods. Chemically, it consists of one sulfur atom with two oxygen groups and two methyl groups. The MSM used here is vegan.

Glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride, 500 mg. Glucosamine is an amino sugar, in other words a sugar molecule with an amino group. It naturally occurs in connective tissue. The sulfate potassium chloride form is a stabilized variant.

Pumpkin seed extract, 350 mg per capsule. A 15:1 extract, meaning fifteen parts of raw material are used for one part of extract. The seeds of Cucurbita pepo, the oil pumpkin, are used.

Saw palmetto extract, 160 mg. A 10:1 extract standardized to 45 percent fatty acids. Serenoa repens is a fan palm from the southeastern USA; the fruits are used.

Nettle root extract, 60 mg. A 20:1 extract from the root of Urtica dioica. Unlike in tea, the leaf is not used here, but the root.

What zinc, selenium, and vitamin E do

Selenium is a trace element that the body needs only in very small amounts. Vitalplant selenium capsules provide 200 micrograms per capsule, bound as selenomethionine.

Why the binding form matters

Selenomethionine is an organic selenium compound. The selenium in it sits in the position where sulfur would otherwise be in the amino acid methionine. Inorganic alternatives such as sodium selenite are structured differently.

200 micrograms correspond to 363 percent of the nutrient reference value. The amount is given in micrograms, not milligrams — with selenium, required amounts are a thousand times lower than, for example, with magnesium.

400 mg buckwheat germ extract. The plant extract forms the capsule matrix. Despite its name, buckwheat is not a grain, but a knotweed plant and therefore naturally gluten-free.

What selenium does
