Zinc and Vitamin C in one capsule

Vitalplant Zinc + C capsules combine two micronutrients that are often taken separately. One capsule provides 10 mg zinc and 320 mg vitamin C.

Two nutrients, two forms

Vitamin C as PureWay-C®. A trademarked vitamin C complex in which ascorbic acid is combined with citrus bioflavonoids. 340 mg PureWay-C® contains 320 mg vitamin C, which corresponds to 400 percent of the nutrient reference value.

Zinc as bisglycinate. 34 mg zinc bisglycinate provide 10 mg elemental zinc, and thus 100 percent of the nutrient reference value. The zinc is bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine, a structure known as a chelate.

The difference compared with our Zinc 25: there, the zinc content is 25 mg per capsule, but without vitamin C. Zinc + C is designed for anyone who wants both nutrients in one capsule.

What zinc and vitamin C do

Vitamin C contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, as well as to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones, and blood vessels. Vitamin C also increases iron absorption.

Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, hair, and nails, and to normal cognitive function. Both nutrients help protect cells from oxidative stress. All statements listed are registered in the EU Register of authorised health claims.

Zinc + C capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of three ingredients: PureWay-C®, zinc bisglycinate, and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colourings. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Each batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

What bioflavonoids are

Citrus bioflavonoids are a group of plant pigments from citrus fruits, including hesperidin from oranges, naringin from grapefruit, and rutin. It is naringin that gives grapefruit its bitter note.

They are not found in the juicy flesh, but in the white inner layer between the peel and the segments, botanically called the albedo, as well as in the membranes. In other words, exactly the parts that end up as waste when filleting and that are pressed out of the juice. A glass of orange juice therefore contains significantly less of them than an orange you eat.

Why the combination makes sense

In the fruit, vitamin C and flavonoids always occur together. In contrast, isolated ascorbic acid is a single substance, removed from any context.

The raw material PureWay-C® recreates this context by combining ascorbic acid with citrus bioflavonoids. Zinc and vitamin C, in turn, end up in one capsule because both come from very different sources in the kitchen: zinc mostly from animal foods and legumes, vitamin C almost exclusively from fruit and vegetables.

What 400 percent means and what it does not mean

The percentage on the pack refers to the nutrient reference value, set out in Annex XIII of the EU Food Information Regulation. For vitamin C, that is 80 mg; for zinc, 10 mg.

These values are purely label figures: a single value for all adults, regardless of age, gender, weight, or life situation. They are neither a recommendation nor an upper limit. So the fact that 400 percent appears here next to 100 percent does not mean a nutrient is overdosed fourfold, but only that two completely different reference values are used in the denominator.

Two nutrients, two time frames

Vitamin C is water-soluble and is continuously excreted through the kidneys. Zinc, on the other hand, is a mineral that the body retains bound in tissues.

That is why a tolerable total daily intake of 25 mg has been set for zinc, while no such figure could be derived for vitamin C in the same way. Anyone taking several products at once should therefore mainly add up the mineral.

Take 1 to 2 capsules daily whole with plenty of liquid before a meal. The timing is there for a reason: phytates from whole grains and legumes bind zinc in the intestine. If you do not tolerate the capsule on an empty stomach, take it with a light meal.

340 mg PureWay-C with 320 mg vitamin C, which is 400 percent of the nutrient reference value. Plus 34 mg zinc bisglycinate with 10 mg elemental zinc, so 100 percent. With two capsules, both values are doubled.

Both are within the intended range. One capsule already covers 100 percent of the zinc reference value. With two capsules, that amounts to 20 mg of zinc and 640 mg of vitamin C. Anyone who regularly takes two should not use any other zinc-containing product alongside it.
