Vitamin D3 with K2 and magnesium, in two dosages

Vitalplant Vitamin D3+ capsules are available in 2,000 and 4,000 IU. Both versions contain the same formula; they differ only in the amount of vitamin D and the dosing schedule.

Why two strengths lead to the same result

Vitamin D is fat-soluble and is stored in the body. It therefore does not need to be taken daily, but can be taken at longer intervals.

2,000 IU every other day or 4,000 IU every fourth day both work out to an average of 1,000 IU per day. Which option is more suitable is a matter of personal routine, not quantity.

200 µg vitamin K2 as MK7. Menachinone-7 is the long-chain form of vitamin K2 and corresponds to 260 percent of the nutrient reference value.

600 mg magnesium citrate, providing 90 mg elemental magnesium. Vitamin D3, K2 and magnesium are closely related in nutritional science, which is why they are combined here in one capsule.

What vitamin D, K and magnesium do

Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal muscle function, and normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus. It also plays a role in cell division.

Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal blood clotting. Magnesium contributes to normal energy metabolism and the maintenance of normal bones.

All of the stated claims are listed in the EU Register of authorized health claims.

Vitamin D3+ capsules: composition and quality

The formula consists of four ingredients: magnesium citrate, cholecalciferol, menachinone MK7, and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants. Bottled in amber glass. Every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Behind Vitalplant is Christian Lazar, a licensed pharmacist with over 35 years of professional experience at Stern Pharmacy.

Recommended use: Vitamin D3 2000: Take 1 capsule every other day, without chewing and with sufficient liquid. Vitamin D3 4000: Take 1 capsule every fourth day, without chewing and with sufficient liquid.

Important notes: Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and lifestyle. The stated recommended daily intake must not be exceeded. Keep out of the reach of small children.

Allergens: According to the raw material specification, it contains no allergens requiring declaration pursuant to Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

I.U. and micrograms

Vitamin D packages almost always show two numbers for the same amount. The International Unit, abbreviated I.U. or IU in English, comes from a time when vitamins could not yet be weighed, but could only be compared by their effect in animal testing.

The conversion factor is fixed: 1 microgram of vitamin D equals 40 I.U. 2,000 I.U. therefore correspond to 50 µg, and 4,000 I.U. are 100 µg. Legally, the label must show the amount in micrograms; the I.U. are listed alongside it because many people are used to them.

Why latitude matters

Vitamin D is formed in the skin from a precursor of cholesterol when UV-B radiation hits it. The key factor is the angle of the sun: when it is low in the sky, the radiation travels a longer path through the atmosphere, and the short-wave UV-B portion is filtered out almost completely in the process.

At Germany's latitude, this is roughly the case from October to March. Window glass also blocks UV-B, which is why a sunny spot by the window does nothing in this respect. Vitamin D is only present in significant amounts in a few foods anyway, especially oily sea fish.

Strictly speaking, not a vitamin

By definition, a vitamin is a substance the body cannot produce itself. Vitamin D does not fit that definition, because the skin can make it. The name dates from before this was known and has remained.

Chemically, vitamin D belongs to the secosteroids, so it is related to cholesterol. There are two forms: D2, ergocalciferol, which is produced in irradiated mushrooms and yeast, and D3, cholecalciferol, the form that human skin also produces. These capsules contain D3.

What MK7 means in vitamin K

Vitamin K comes in two families. K1, phylloquinone, is formed by green plants in their leaves. K2, the menaquinones, on the other hand, come from bacteria and are produced during fermentation processes.

Within the menaquinones, they are distinguished by the length of a side chain and numbered accordingly from MK4 to MK13. MK7 is usually obtained by fermentation with Bacillus subtilis, the bacterium that also makes the Japanese soy dish natto possible. The addition all-trans describes the spatial arrangement of this chain and is a mark of quality, because only this form occurs naturally.

Our Vitamin D3 capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the variant. The 2,000 version is taken every other day, the 4,000 version every fourth day, one capsule each time, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. Take it with a meal that contains some fat: vitamin D and vitamin K2 are both fat-soluble and are then absorbed better.

Mathematically, both amount to the same thing. 2,000 IU every other day works out to an average of 1,000 IU per day, and 4,000 IU every four days does too. The only difference is the rhythm: with the 2,000 IU dose, you take it more often in smaller steps; with the 4,000 IU dose, less often. If a two-day schedule is easier to remember, go with the first; if you want to think about it as rarely as possible, go with the second.

Since both vitamins play a role in bone metabolism, the combination makes sense. Each capsule contains 200 µg of vitamin K2, which is 260 percent of the nutrient reference value, in the form of menaquinone-7. MK7 is the long-chain form, which remains available in the body much longer than the short-chain MK4. Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal blood clotting.

Each capsule contains 600 mg of magnesium citrate, providing 90 mg of elemental magnesium and thus 24 percent of the nutrient reference value. Magnesium helps maintain normal bones and therefore complements the same line as D3 and K2. Anyone taking a pure magnesium product in parallel should include this amount in their calculation.

The amounts are far above the threshold of 15 percent of the nutrient reference value. Authorized claims: Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system, the maintenance of normal bones, the maintenance of normal muscle function, the maintenance of normal teeth, and the normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus. It also has a role in cell division.

Because vitamin D is fat-soluble and stored in the body, unlike the water-soluble B vitamins. It therefore does not need to be taken daily; what matters is the total amount over the week. The two- or four-day schedule is calculated from the capsule strength.

Simply take the capsule the next day and continue the schedule from there. Taking two capsules together later on does not make sense; the stated recommended intake should not be exceeded. With a storage vitamin, a day taken later hardly makes any difference anyway.

Both versions contain 90 capsules, but they last for different lengths of time. With the 2,000-strength version taken every other day, that’s around 180 days; with the 4,000-strength version taken every fourth day, around 360 days. One tin therefore provides a six-month or almost one-year supply. Bottled in amber glass, store in a cool, dry place.
