Three magnesium compounds with 100 percent of the nutrient reference value

With magnesium, it is not just the amount that matters, but the compound it comes in. That is why Vitalplant’s Magnesium Complex does not rely on a single form, but combines three organically bound magnesium compounds in one capsule.

Why three magnesium compounds

Organically bound means: the magnesium is linked to a carbon-containing partner, a fruit acid, or an amino acid. Inorganic compounds such as magnesium oxide contain more magnesium per gram, but are considered less well tolerated. Our formula completely leaves them out.

Magnesium citrate. The magnesium salt of citric acid is the most commonly used organic form of magnesium and has been studied accordingly well. In our formula, it is present as tri-magnesium dicitrate.

Magnesium bisglycinate. Here, one magnesium atom is bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. This structure is called a chelate. Bisglycinate is considered especially gentle on the stomach.

Magnesium malate. The magnesium salt of malic acid. Malic acid occurs naturally in apples and other fruits.

Anyone who would otherwise have to choose one form gets all three here. That is the difference from our single-ingredient products Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium Glycinate, each of which relies on one compound. The complex also provides the highest amount of magnesium of the three products.

What magnesium does in the body

Magnesium is one of the minerals with the most authorized health claims in the EU register. Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal psychological function. Magnesium also contributes to normal energy metabolism, electrolyte balance, normal protein synthesis, and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.

The body cannot produce magnesium itself or store it to any significant extent. Intake is therefore a daily task.

Magnesium Complex capsules: composition and quality

The full formula consists of four components: the three magnesium compounds and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. No fillers, no anti-caking agents, no colorants, no sugar. The product is vegan and gluten-free, filled in amber glass. Every batch is tested for heavy metals by an independent laboratory.

Recommended intake: Take 3 capsules daily, unchewed, with sufficient liquid before, during, or after physical activity.

Important notes: Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and lifestyle. The stated recommended daily intake must not be exceeded. Keep out of reach of small children.

Allergens: According to the raw material specification, it contains no allergens requiring declaration in accordance with Annex II of Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, do not freeze, and protect from direct sunlight.

What a chelate is

The word comes from the Greek chele, meaning crab claw. It refers to a molecule that does not merely touch a metal ion at one point, but surrounds it with several gripping points at the same time, like a pair of tongs.

In bisglycinate, two molecules of the amino acid glycine take on this role, wrapping around a magnesium atom from both sides. Citrate and malate are fruit acids with several acid groups and enclose the ion in a similar way. All three compounds in this formula therefore follow the same principle: the mineral is enclosed, not present as a free salt.

Three partners from the same metabolic pathway

Citric acid and malic acid are not just any fruit acids. Both are intermediates in the citric acid cycle, the process through which cells obtain their energy; citrate is right at the beginning, malate shortly before the end of the same round.

Glycine, in turn, is the smallest and simplest of all amino acids, with only one hydrogen atom as its side chain. So the three partners are consistently substances that occur in the body anyway, and not body-incompatible carriers.

Why some magnesium salts have a laxative effect

What is not absorbed in the intestine remains there and draws in water through osmosis. This is exactly the basis for the use of certain magnesium salts as laxatives, such as Epsom salt, chemically magnesium sulfate.

The poorer the solubility of a compound and the larger the individual dose, the more likely this effect is to occur. Both are the reason for the design of this formula: exclusively organically bound, highly soluble forms, and the daily amount divided into three capsules instead of a single large dose.

Why it has to be three capsules

Organically bound magnesium comes with a lot of packaging. In citrate, malate, and bisglycinate, the magnesium content is only about 14 to 16 percent of the mass.

For the 375 mg of magnesium in the daily dose, about two and a half grams of compound are therefore needed. That does not fit into a single capsule, which is why there are three. With magnesium oxide, which contains about 60 percent magnesium, far less would be needed, but that would give up exactly the solubility that matters here. So the number of capsules is no coincidence, but the direct result of the choice of forms.

Our Magnesium Complex Capsules are manufactured to the highest quality standards and independently tested for heavy metals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Three capsules daily, swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. The recommended intake refers to a connection with physical activity, so before, during, or after training. If you are not training, simply take the three capsules at a fixed time each day.

Because the three compounds differ in solubility and compatibility. Tri-magnesium dicitrate is highly water-soluble, magnesium bisglycinate chelate is considered especially gentle on the stomach, and magnesium malate binds the magnesium to malic acid. Each form contributes exactly 41.67 mg of elemental magnesium, for a total of 125 mg per capsule. Instead of committing to one form, the complex distributes the amount across three.

125 mg of elemental magnesium per capsule, so 375 mg per day for three capsules. That is exactly 100 percent of the nutrient reference value. Among our three magnesium products, the complex is therefore the only one that reaches this value.

The complex is the broadest option and provides the largest amount at 375 mg per day. Magnesium citrate relies on a single, highly soluble form and delivers 246 mg with two capsules. Magnesium glycinate consists exclusively of bisglycinate, the most stomach-friendly form, and reaches 280 mg with four capsules. In short: amount and variety with the complex, simplicity with the citrate, and tolerability with the glycinate.

No, that is a recommendation and not a requirement. The note is there because it makes it easy to tie taking it to an existing habit. For magnesium itself, the timing does not play a decisive role. Consistency over weeks matters more than the perfect time of day on individual days.

At 375 mg daily, which is 100 percent of the nutrient reference value, the approved claims are clearly met: Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to electrolyte balance, to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal protein synthesis, and to the maintenance of normal bones.

Magnesium salts bind water in the intestine, which is why larger amounts taken at once can make stools softer. This is a well-known effect of these compounds and not a sign of poor quality. If you are sensitive, spread the three capsules throughout the day instead of taking them all at once, or choose our magnesium glycinate, whose bisglycinate is considered especially gentle on the stomach.

The bottle contains 120 capsules. At three capsules per day, it lasts 40 days. Aside from the three magnesium compounds and the capsule shell made of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, it contains nothing else—no anti-caking agents and no fillers. Packaged in amber glass, store in a cool, dry place.
