Magnesium bisglycinate as a pure chelate

What a chelate is

In bisglycinate, one magnesium atom is enclosed by two molecules of the amino acid glycine. This ring-shaped bond is called a chelate, derived from the Greek word for crab claw. The magnesium is not present as a free salt, but embedded in an amino acid structure.

500 mg bisglycinate per capsule, which provides 70 mg of elemental magnesium. The magnesium content in bisglycinate is naturally lower than in citrate because the two glycine molecules add weight.

Glycine, the smallest of all amino acids

Glycine has just a single hydrogen atom as its side chain. That makes it not only the smallest of the twenty proteinogenic amino acids, but also the only one with no mirror-image form: there is no L-glycine and no D-glycine, because the molecule is built symmetrically.

It owes its name to its taste. The Greek word glykys means sweet, and pure glycine actually tastes distinctly sweet. In the body, it is also the most common building block of collagen, where every third position is occupied by it; only then can the triple helix of collagen be twisted so tightly.

From rock to capsule

For almost all magnesium compounds, the starting point is a mineral: magnesite or dolomite, mined in open-cast mining, or magnesium from seawater and brine.

This is first calcined to produce magnesium oxide, and this oxide is the starting material for almost all other compounds, including the organically bound ones. So anyone buying a capsule with bisglycinate is buying a product that has already gone through several processing steps. Organically bound describes the finished compound, not the origin of the raw material.

How a chelate is formed, and what can go wrong

For bisglycinate, a magnesium source is reacted with glycine in water, under heat and controlled pH. What matters is how completely the reaction goes, because any unreacted starting material remains in the product.

This is exactly where a well-known market problem lies. Goods sold as bisglycinate are sometimes diluted with magnesium oxide, which raises the magnesium content on paper. A noticeably high elemental content in a supposed bisglycinate is therefore not a quality feature, but a reason to ask questions.

The calculation behind 500 and 70

The magnesium content of a compound can be calculated from the molar masses. Magnesium weighs about 24, a glycine residue about 74, and two of them sit on the metal in bisglycinate. That gives a total of about 172.

Twenty-four out of one hundred seventy-two is about 14 percent, and 14 percent of 500 mg is the 70 mg on our nutrition table. So the number is not a manufacturer claim, but simple chemistry. Anyone who finds significantly more than 14 percent in a bisglycinate should read the previous paragraph again.

This is due to the chemistry of the raw material. In bisglycinate, each magnesium ion is bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Glycine makes up most of the weight: 500 mg of magnesium bisglycinate contains only 70 mg of magnesium. So anyone who wants to reach a sensible daily amount needs several capsules. The calculation is different with citrate, but tolerance is different there too.

Elemental magnesium is the amount of pure mineral, without the partner to which it is bound. Pure magnesium cannot be taken in this form; it is always present as a compound, such as bisglycinate, citrate, or malate. The label should therefore show two figures: the amount of the compound and the amount of magnesium it contains. When comparing products, look at the second figure.
